Blackfang Redclaw watched the Redwallers repell his attacks with ease. Nothing seemed to work. When he tried to use fire-swingers, they promptly used a long bow to kill the slingers. Also, they threw glass on the ground to prevent any night attacks without their knowledge. The seige tower was burned, grapplers were cut with knives, they never attacked unless the sun was at their backs. They seemed to have unlimited resources of warfare expertise, but his spies and captives claimed they were peaceful. Peaceful!

Rosefire didn't look up when the door opened. She knew who it was. "I found one," a voice called out over the noise of burning buildings. Then paws siezed her roughly and she was dragged free of the wood that had fallen on top of her. Blackfang Redclaw had stripped the land around Redwall bare and his scouts were constantly attacking more settlements. Streamhome had been yet another of these to fall under Blackfang's claw. Rosefire's mother had ordered her into the hidden room while her father held the door. Then screams had come from above, followed by an unbareable silence. By then the roof had fallen in, effctively trapping the young mouse until help came or she was discovered by vermin.
The pain was excruciating and Rosefire could bear it no longer. She passed out. In her dream a badger with an oddly golden stripe, an otter with flashing eyes, a squirrel with a rough leather pouch and a sling at hand, and a hare that had a silver stripe on one paw stood just behind a tall, heroic mouse with a beautiful sword. "Rose," he said quietly. "That is the name of a great warrior. You shall be the sword-bearer. You have found your place as a warrior, though you were once peaceful. Like Laterose." Then the dream faded to mist and she fell into blackness. But that one word echoed through her mind. Laterose. It was sweet, musical, loving, beautiful.

Laterose.
