"Wintry Tale"
Singing, singing above the trees
Winter birds spread their wings
They dive and swoop, stark ‘gainst the sky
In colors so bright, they dazzle the eye
Up there life is pleasant, bursting with warmth
Despite winter’s chill, there’s a song in each heart
Caroling, caroling, out in the snow
These are the creatures standing below
Bundled in mittens, coats, hats, and scarves
They sing to the families gathered about their hearths
They don’t sing for money or clothing or gifts
They sing for the joy of closing old rifts
Listening, listening, inside where it’s warm
Brother and sister live near without harm
Mother and father and daughter and son
Their house is a home, when together they come
Previous troubles, worries, and strife
Fall to the side in the glow of love and life
Shivering, shivering, exposed to the cold
A squirrel that is young and an owl that is old
Together they stumble, through drifts of white flakes
As their journey they so perilously make
Regretfully now, the owl looks to the sky
O what she would give, only to fly!
Wondering, wondering, a song reaches their ears
The young squirrel looks forward, overcoming his fears
Of danger and sees, to his pleasant surprise
A chorus of creatures and bright birds in the skies
A little cottage, too, adds its grace to the scene
Looking not poor but not wealthy, somewhere between
Hurrying, hurrying, they pick up the pace
A house means some company, whatev’r else be the case
With rosy red cheeks and cautious dark eyes
They come up upon the house where it lies
Below wintry skies, they find refuge there --
A welcome from beasts who are so kind, full of care
Curious, curious, they look ‘round in awe
At the kind, happy family who lends them a paw
The two weary travelers are caught up in the joy
Of watching little ones play with meager toys
The moral of the chilly, wintry tale?
Even in cold times, a kind heart ne’er fails!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Deep Autumn"
Pitter, patter
The rain, it splatters
Blown across the ground
Soughing, sighing
The wind is trying
To turn the leaves around
Flitting, floating
They are eloping
The leaves fall from the trees
Bending, bowing
The tree is frowning
At the stormy sky it sees
Gray and cloudy
The sky is rowdy
As the storm within it grows
Flashing, lighting
Elements fighting
Though why? Nobeast knows
Safe and sound
Under the ground
Molebeasts catch their Z’s
Sheltered from
The elements around
Squirrels sleep among the trees
Dry and warm
Protected from harm
Mice of the Abbey sleep
Snoring loud
The hedgehogs proud
Relax in safety’s keep
With naught to lose
The otters and shrews
Snooze under the stars
Badgers and hares
Without a care
Sleep among kitchen’s jars
O’er Mossfl’w’r’s halls
Abbey’s walls
And the fortress of the mountain
The sky falls
The wind calls
And rain comes like a fountain
Lightening clashes,
Brilliant white flashes
Autumn’s tempest rages on
But beasts below
Will only know
The storm as one long gone
For when they wake
With small headache
From noise during the night
They will greet
That Fall morn sweet
With a laugh that knows no fright
