Chapter 2 ~The Captive and the Woods
Wanekalily is almost 5 seasons old.

I don’t know how long ago it was that I was forced into this prison, how long ago my mother and brother died. But it feels like forever.
I heard the guards talking outside of my cell, the cell that all of the babies were thrown into. They say that Teminor has no use for me, my brother, and my sister anymore. We’re too young to work as his slaves and we’re just using up his food supply. He might kill us or just let us go. I don’t want to go to the Dark Forrest.

“Bring them here.” Teminor hissed. The guards half walked-half dragged the prisoners up to their master. “You little ones, filth. What do you think I should do with you?” I was too afraid to answer. He grinned at my bother in a disgusting, evil way as only true villains can. He jumped up. “You, the big fat one!” he yelled. Even the guards shook with fear. “You answer me! Unless your too stupid, you useless piece of lard!” he sat down again, and my brother replied in a very shaky voice. “Ssssir, Yyyya’ sssee, um, I (gulp) ppleease, ccould yyyou llet us gggo?” “You want me to let you go! Huh? Is that what you want?!?” Teminor stood up again. My brother nodded and the villain began walking around us, checking us over. Finally he sat down again. “I would normally have all three of you killed, however, because we are moving on to capture another dormouse village...” His voice trailed off and he paused and whispered, “Damios.” And a look of hatred passed across his face for a moment.
It left as suddenly as it came and soon Teminor had turned his attention back to us. “You are very lucky, you realize. I have not enough time to kill you. You two are free to go,” and he motioned to me and my sister. “You,” he pointed to my brother. “Old enough to work now eh?” His lips parted in an evil smirk. “You’ll stay here and work hard, guards, chain him up again!” The guards saluted and dragged my brother away. That was the last time I saw him, when he was being dragged out the door. He looked pale, like he was going to be sick. His eyes locked on mine, they were full of tears. Then the door shut and my sister and I burst out crying. “You!” Teminor pointed to some other guards in the room. Remove these two dirtbags from my presence, they disgust me!” The guards led us away.
While they walked they talked about all of the woodlander villages that they would have to conquer to get to the final destination. I barely heard them. They led us out the door, down a hallway, and into the sunlight. While they I blinked, blinded by the amazing brightness that I hadn’t seen in almost two seasons. The guards pulled us across the ground for a length and then dropped us in a clearing. “Now get on with you!” Barked one guard. “Yeah, start moving!” Shouted another. And they both walked away laughing. I wiped away my tears. Tears of sadness. Tears of hatred. Tears of confusion. Tears of loneliness.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We had been wandering for days not knowing where to go. It was only me and my sister, Trista.
We had no idea where we were. My older sister said that we should try to get to Redwall abbey, a place that she had heard about, where every good woodlander was welcome and safe. It sounded wonderful, I wanted to feel safe.
Most of the time we couldn’t find a proper shelter so we just lay together in the undergrowth, wondering about how our brother, Brendoak, was doing, and remembering our mother, father, and brother. Whenever I had the dream with the black eyes and woke up crying my sister would comfort me. We were confused, and scared. I was only five seasons old and she was but seven seasons old. Our brother, Brendoak, was only ten seasons old and he was surely being forced to work much too hard. I was afraid for his life.
During the day my sister and I gathered food and hiked through the never-ending woods. We knew that Redwall abbey was to the East, but we did not know of any trails. With only the sun to guide us we were sure that we were going of course. “Can’t we use the stars to guide us?” I asked my sister. “Yes, but I have not learned about the stars. The searats use stars to guide them. I wish that I could have learned about the stars like them.” she replied.
How ironic that she should mention searats....
