I saw the fewest deer ever - only 3 doe and all pretty far away. Sat. morning it rained though, so I think they pretty much stayed put (plus it probably kept a few hunters inside which means they're not out in the woods pushing the deer). Another reason may be they didn't care for the wolf that was in the neighborhood.
I saw it twice on saturday. The first time I noticed movement through the trees, and assumed it was a deer. But then I could see that it was very dark, shorter, and moved more like a dog (it was a couple of hundred yards away). It was angling toward me, but then stopped, and pretty much went back the way it came. When I went in for lunch, Werner (another hunter in our party) confirmed what I saw as he saw it as well. That afternoon I saw it again, this time for about 3-4 minutes as it made it's way through the shallow ravine that my stand overlooks. It came from the left or south, and slowly worked his way north, northwest. It was still pretty far away, may 150 yards or so.
The flying squirrel comes most every year. We have a fire pit outside of the cabin where we usually have a nice fire going. There are a couple of platform birdfeeders that Werner stocks with corn, suet, and birdseed. The squirrel comes at night and sits on the platform and eats. Very social - people don't seem to bother it too much. Great big nocturnal eyes peering out from the shadows.
Saw 3 wild turkeys as well. Pretty funny watching them try to fly out of the woods - they are very clumsy, hitting branches as they try to clear the tops of the trees.
Our party got 2 buck and 1 doe opening weekend which is pretty good. The guy who got the doe was still going to hunt this week and didn't really want it, so I took it and we will enjoy venison hamburger, chops, ring bologna, sausage, hot dogs, brats and hot sticks - not necessarily in that order. Should take about a month for the sausages. If I had gotten a deer, the other thing we can do is donate them to a food pantry. All you have to do is drop it off at the processor, and they donate the time to butcher it, grind it into hamburger, and get it to a pantry.
