Why is it that a candidate needs to find out how PTO's work in February, March or April? Where are they the rest of the year? As a former PTO president, I would like to see candidates who plan to run for office in 2005 show up at meetings now and learn about the system before they throw their hats in the ring. Only then will they know if they can represent parents and teachers appropriately. This is especially true in times like this when we are all faced with problems that are reminiscent of the days when our school committee eliminated over 80 employees and we had 35 kids our kindergartens. Maybe candidates should remember the days when PTO’s had to fundraise to buy books and the curriculum was better or worse depending on what side of town you lived on. At that time PTO’s were working to fund field trips and they hoped to raise enough money to run enrichment programs because these wasn’t any room for any of these things in the budget. Has the candidate asked the parents or teachers if they want to go back to that or has he made a plan to avoid it? We need to make sure the current school committee is maintained so they can continue the hard work they have proven they are capable of, and we can continue to see the improvements we have seen in recent years. Good luck Joe and Mae.
