This issue annoys me because, in no way should we be busing children outside of the Dracut district. The fact that we have done so proves how 'accommodating' we are as a community. It is not fair to the community to use funds for the private districts. Private means personal, among many other analogies. Public, its antonym has the definition of municipal. Therefore, public funds should stay in the community. If parents can afford private school, let them take this issue up with the school that their children are attending. They are paying THEM for education, as we parents do with our children. Let those funds also include transportation expenses.
The tax debate shouldn't be a debate at all. First, taxes are not choosey as to who pays what. Elderly, childless, and parents with adult children pay the same rate as those of us with school age children. No one walks around with a census and then bases our taxes on what each of us uses. Taxes pay for DRACUT and services within our community.
If someone needs to quote a town's resources, try one in Massachusetts that also pays for the funding of private school transportation. Then, please show me the figures of their tax base, average household incomes, and the community budget. If you have ever lived or know of someone that lives in New Hampshire, you see how they can get away with no sales tax. Property taxes are much higher than ours. If we all took our taxes and added in the amount it costs for the highest private school tuition, that would probably equal or closely relate to the average property tax in New Hampshire.
Ms. Hayward, don't ever change this stance of including private school children OUTSIDE OF OUR AREA being transported. If we have extra money in the budget, use it for the Dracut public school students that truly need it. Buy some books, fund hiring some additional teachers and/or aides, or give it to the Special Education department. We should never have transported these children in the first place, and I, for one am thankful it was chosen to be eliminated as our burden.
Thank you!
