Subject: The Very Last Spoiler-Free Solidarity Post (Beta Board Version)

You know, there's a certain perfect irony in the fact that the A-board would crash on the eve of the last ever episode. There's a certain universal rightness to it- like Xander's girlfriends are inevitably demons. Anyway, here it is again, for those who missed it. Cheers!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well.
Here it is. The last stand of the last holdouts.
It feels weird, writing this...knowing that after tommorrow there will be an end to something that I've admired so much. Odd too, in that something that required such self-discipline -the resistance to BtVS spoiler temptation- will instantly dissolve into a non-existent challenge as of 9:01 PM on May 20th.
I suppose I'll transfer my main loyalty to AtS, but though I've watched -and liked- it regularly since the end of last season, I fear it will always feel like a placebo for BtVS to me. I hope I'm wrong.
For the Spoiler Whores surrounding us, thanks for your courtesy and the respect of our wishes to Be Surprised, however inadvisable it may be....smile...
I'm thrilled beyond measure to head into tomorrow night, unsure of the outcome (though of course the casting of JM on AtS lends at least one sort of vague spoiler). For those of you going steadfastly Into the Dark with me, I salute you.
For those who gave it a valiant effort- well, the Buffyverse, in its infinite worship of "That Which is neither Black, nor White, but is Grey", seems to credit effort even in those who ultimately fail.
In other words, points for intent...smile...
For the very final Spoiler-free Solidarity discussion, I thought of something that seems fitting...something that even the SWs can probably appreciate. In appreciation for all the surprises that ME's given us...
Please list the single, most shocking moment of BtVS for which you were unspoiled.
Thanks all...I'll see you on the other side.
~GGj
Willow and Oz breaking up for good
[> Thanks GGj -- Halcyon *sniffly*, 11:13:41 05/20/03 Tue (209.32.71.146)
I'm cautiously looking forward to watching the ep tonight, but I if I could keep it 6:59pm for a very long, long time, I probably would. But I can't stop the future from happening :(.
Anywho, the most shocking unspoiled moment for me is a three way tie between the kiss at the end of OMWF, the kiss at the end of TR, and the end of Smashed. I don't believe I've ever sat with my mouth hanging wide open and then shrieking loud enough to send my cats running before in the history of BtVS. So am I looking forward to another moment like that tonight? Hell yeah! :D
[> Repeating my answer... -- GGj, 11:14:31 05/20/03 Tue (24.210.34.61)
......would probably have to be the final, ending scenes of The Wish. I remember feeling so incredibly distraught, seeing the horribly hard and bitter Buffy, seeming mildly surprised, yet not really regretful, when The Master snapped her neck, the killing of Willow by Oz -who was supposed to be in love with her, dammit!- and the painful, achingly desperate hope of Giles for a better world as he crushed Anya's pendant.
I remember feeling actual joy, when we flashed back to Sunnydale as it should be, with colorful clothing and sunshine, snarky Cordelia and final shot of laughing, loving Scoobies.
I know that episode wouldn't have had the impact -the extreme emotional power- if I had known what would have happened before watching it. What a wonderful example of what BtVS has delivered over the years!
[> spoiler free and liking it -- michelle, 11:19:29 05/20/03 Tue (152.163.252.5)
being spoiler free has been so hard but with the help of this thread i made it. the ending is bittersweet. 7 years of my life of watching buffy is gone...buffy leaving is like a closing of my childhood since i started watching when i was 12 during welcome to the hellmouth. trying to stop the hands of time is impossible, believe me i tried..i said if i can just freeze everything at 7:59 pm it will be o.k. i am nervous, sad, anxious, worried, and many others....
my most shocking moment was the kiss at the end of OMWF...i didnt expect that but i loved it. and when buffy and spike first had sex and made the building come down...classic
we made it guys...spoiler free....and i bet the pay off will be great
hey GGj...thanks so much for this...I did my best a while back, but I think you do it better :-)
hmmm, well, I've been spoiled for quite a bit in the past, though not for all, so the end of The Wish was also a shocker for me, as well as Tara losing her mind to Glory, the end of Smashed, and from this season, Spike biting Wood (then the cut to commercial!) in LMPTM...
looking forward to and dreading tonight all at the same time...
I'll repeat my answer from last night. I've been unspoiled for all the moments except the 1st 12 episodes of season 7. I haven't been here that long. 8 o'clock is going to come way too soon.
Thanks for having this post!
I am fairly new to Buffy. My first episode was The Body and my second was OMWF. I've watched every episode since then. (Including the back episodes.) Unfortunatly I was somewhat spoiled for all of Seasons 1-5 since I started watching in Season 6. I know Tara and Willow were a couple, so when Willow and Oz broke up I figured it was really over. I didn't know all of the past history between Buffy and Spike so it wasn't major to me when they kissed.
The most surprised I have been was when Andrew killed Jonathan. I never expected him to actually be able to do it.
Although I'm a fairly new Buffy viewer, I'm really going to miss it. I've grown to love this show and live my life around Tuesdays. Thank goodness for DVDs and reruns!
[> *sigh* I'm mostly unspoiled -- Drake, 12:30:49 05/20/03 Tue (141.157.99.130)
I wish I was completely... but alas... the doom of spoilers in headers ruined me.
Ya know, yesterday I drove 6 hours to get to B'More and watch the finale with some friends... listening to my ipod, every song about "goodbye" just wrecked me. This hurts too much.
Anyways - Most shocking moment?
Tie between Buffy killing Angel in "Becoming" and jumping into the portal in "The Gift"... watching The Gift I had just gotten into the show... and I was like, "They're not going to kill the main character... that's rediculou..." But they did. That's also the ep that catapulted me online. I saw Becoming on DVDs... and was just completely stunned. No show ever made me cry before those two eps.
*sniffle* I'm sure I'll cry again tonight.
[> Hi GGj's! I was a semi spoiler ho last season and a die hard -- Peaches, 12:34:12 05/20/03 Tue (66.137.38.193)
spoiler ho this seaon...there is nothing I don't know!!
But before that I tried to stay relatively spoiler free. The most shocking moments for me were Angel turning into Angelus after he and Buffy make love, Buffy sticking the sword through Angel at the end of season 2 and killing him..or so we thought, Buffy taking the dive in The Gift, Spike getting his soul at the end of last season and the most shocking for me was Smashed!
It was definitely a shock and awe moment for me. Being able to hear the zipper going down was almost too much....definitely shock and awe but I loved it!
Hope everyone enjoys tonights episode it is very hard to believe that this is the very last ep. and it is over...going to need a lot of kleenex tonight!
[> Once more (with lotsa feeling) -- Quills, 15:34:54 05/20/03 Tue (64.254.192.243)
Hey — this is like vuja de, or something. I just posted a reply to this thread over at the Alpha Board! :)
Thank you, Girl Guide Jones, for providing this post throughout these last weeks of Buffy. I've managed to stay spoiler-free, more or less, and it has been helpful to know that others have been struggling to do so, too! Strength in numbers and all that jazz.
As I mentioned in the Alpha post: I didn't really start watching Buffy regularly until last winter. I started watching the new episodes with Gone. I had seen a little bit here and there on FX but hadn't really gotten into it at that point. I had seen enough to know who Spike was, and when I saw "Gone," I was like — woa! Is Buffy having sex with Spike?
And then I borrowed my neighbor's copy of Once More with Feeling, and that was it. I was totally hooked. From that point on, I started watching and taping all of the previous seasons on FX reruns with a passion that can only be described as "obsessive!"
I quickly found Buffy sites on the Internet, including this board, and was basically spoiled for the rest of Season 6, but I made a decision early on to be on spoiled this season.
So, in what would be truly one of my only unspoiled moments of BtVS (because, in watching all of the reruns of previous seasons on FX, I had an idea of what happened to everyone):
When Andrew killed Johnathon. I was totally like, "what the . . . ."
In watching the reruns, I remember being pretty shocked by the scene in Passions where Angel kills Jenny Calendar.
Also, as Peaches mentions, hearing that zipper in Smashed. Whoa!
Also this season, in Dirty Girls, I was somewhat shocked by the scene where Caleb pokes out Xander's eye. Though I had an idea that Xander was going to lose an eye (based on a few tidbits that I had picked up here, accidentally), I still wasn't prepared for that scene, and I totally kicked my husband. Hard.
Thanks again for providing the Solidarity Thread, GGJ!
[> Re: The Very Last Spoiler-Free Solidarity Post (Beta Board Version) -- Rosalind, 16:28:19 05/20/03 Tue (142.173.6.229)
As one who is semi-spoiled grey and likes it, I have to thank you for these posts. I read an interview with one of the cast and he kept referring to BtVS in the past tense. And I thought, öit really is over." I'm by nature a very unsentimental person and yet I felt a kind of bittersweet melancholy. No new Buffy to look forward to next September ever again. My younger daughter who is the other Buffy fanatic in my house told me, with tears in her eyes, "I have been watching this show since I was eight. I'm going to miss Buffy."
I am going to try to get into Angel. A lot of the issues that have been raised on Buffy over the past few years are probably better explored on Angel. The affair between Wes and Lilah compared with Buffy and Spike for example. Does it really matter who loves you, if you can't love yourself etc. But it won't be the same as I don't know the characters.
The most shocking moment for me. Two stand out. One is the scene in Spike's crypt at the end of OOMM. Buffy stalks in, stake at the ready, only to end up in his arms. She wants him, he loves her and that just about sums up the relationship. The fact that it is Spike's dream is just icing on the cake. He has set the parameters of their relationship himself and the second he realizes he loves her.
The second was the murder of Jenny Calender by Angelus. I suspected, although I had never even heard of a spoiler or knew there were people on line who liked to discuss Buffy, that Angel would be brought back to the good somehow. But I realized then that Angel, despite the pretty package, was always going to be dangerous, good or bad.
