Hi everyone,

My name was mentioned again, and since I’m quite fond of it (I inherited it from my grandma) I decided to defend it this time. I wrote a reply the last time this subject came up (I’m the Ilse MK keeps referring to). I decided then to let it go. I will post it now, though. I’m not the type to do hero-worshipping. I’m a bit to old for that. I often disagreed with MK, both on the old board and on this one. I do hold respect for his writing style and his views, and I’m quite tempted to write: ‘Oh, but I like you, MK!’

I will sign this with my own name, and I’ll leave my e-mail address. I’ve always believed in owning your actions. If I felt I couldn’t sign this with my name, I wouldn’t post it.

This is my original reply. Think about it whatever you want. It’s just the opinion of a Dutch woman who’s rapidly nearing the ‘I don’t care’ end of the Gaussian bell curve.

(I recommend reading this with a strong Dutch accent, it works best that way)

This discussion started because MK and I had a discussion on trolling, on the effect of flaming on the theoretical ego, the Self, and on the inner workings of the board, with regard to the 'protectiveness' of certain members over an other member, Heywood.

In that discussion the sentence about ball licking was written. This was supposed to mean 'sucking up' or 'kissing ass'. Please note that there was no mention of any criticism towards Heywood.

Heywood, however, decided to take offense. To me this was a strong case of 'if the shoe fits..', but I decided to just raise my eyebrows and let him be. MK did react, and this time did utter some, pretty mild, critisism.
There was no flaming, no veiled insults or anything like that. It was very clear critisism of the way Heywood handled this topic. Heywood reacted rather badly. It amused me that someone who doesn't feel any qualms about sending a fourteen year old girl a flame wishing her rape and pain, couldn't handle a bit of mild critisism himself. However, since I could see MK's words weren't registering and were consequently taken out of context, I decided once again to let it slide. This whole post wasn't about Heywood,and the fact that he made it about himself, says more about him than about MK and me.

Then Heywood decided to attack MK on the sexual content of the remark. He claimed to have been accused of statutory rape. This implication hadn't even crossed my mind. I did know some of his fans were underaged, but I hadn't linked it to the remark. Again, this says more about Heywood than about us.
I'm quite sure MK didn't mean to say: you fly around the world to collect sexual favors of fangirls. That would be the same as assuming that everytime someone writes : 'fuck you!' they really mean 'let's have sexual relations'.

The statutory rape part also amused me. This coming from someone who was adamant that a fourteen year old should be held responsible for writing rape fantasies, and thus would be rightfully flamed. Leaving aside the fact that I don't believe in flaming, this attitude would assume that teens can make informed decissions about sex. Age of consent is 16 in the Netherlands, by the way, so I have far fewer qualms about the whole thing than most people on this board.

It seemed to me that Heywood felt he had lost the argument on the first point, so he had to find something as to not lose face. And yes, like MK said, that is a matter of ego, in the sense of the theoretical self.

This whole thing was the most non-sensical hissyfit I've ever seen. I've babysat, I've worked retail, I've got a little sister, I worked at legal aid and I work at the district courthouse. And this was still the most non-sensical hissyfit I've ever seen. Congratulations Heywood! You've proved fandom wank and MK absolutely right, and they didn't even have to do anything!

I'm quite aware of the fact that by writing and posting this I've made myself absolutely impossible. That's to bad. Consequentially, this will be my last post on this board. It's been fun.
