Subject: Crash survivor was also caught up in Hillsborough tragedy

A survivor of the Hillsborough football disaster has revealed how he cheated death by seconds in Friday's rail crash.

Karl Brodrick, 44, was pushing a food trolley on the train as it hurtled towards Potters Bar.

He recalled how he left the fourth carriage to begin serving passengers in the next carriage just 10 seconds before the accident happened.

Mr Brodrick, of King's Lynn, spoke of his "incredible luck" after surviving the crash and the Hillsborough disaster which cost 96 lives in 1989. At that time he was a supporter in the Leppings Lane stand where many of the fans died.

He was discharged from hospital today and went straight to the scene of the crash. He said he earlier told a vicar: "I was at Hillsborough. This is the second time I have walked away from one of these things. There has got to be a reason why I have walked away."

Mr Brodrick, who works for Cambridgeshire-based firm Express Catering Services, told how he was rushing through his shift in the hope of being able to relax on the train for the latter part of the journey to King's Lynn.

He said: "I had only just entered the third carriage when I felt the whole train shake. The driver really slammed on the brakes. The trolley fell over me and then on top of me. I crashed down on the corner of a seat and then the trolley landed on top of me. I was lying on my back in the aisle."

He said: "I can remember the people who I served on the train ... I can recall one young man on the rear carriage. I served him a Stella beer and moved on. But when I was in the third carriage he came through the door and asked me for a packet of crisps.

"He was in the third carriage with me but was making his way back to the fourth carriage when the train crashed. I really hope that a 45p packet of crisps saved his life but I don't know what happened to him."
