Subject: Heskey played on the left handside of a 4 man midfield. This is a position he's played before for England and also many times for Leicester City. I don't think it was the right decision but then I don't rate Ericson's style so no surprise there. Vassel is a good player but he's an out and out forward you goon. You are talking total shit - if you want a tactical argument try and come up with something decent. Personally, with the squad we've got (assuming 4-4-2) I'd play Bridge at left back and put Ashley Cole in midfield. Not perfect but Ericson has picked a bad squad.
In reply to: EVG-Kyriakin 's message, "When have any of the England players regularly played on the left of midfield? Joe Cole - No. Owen Hargreaves - No. Heskey - Sort of, but he's shit there. Paul Scholes - No. Ashley Cole - No. Wayne Bridge - No. Dyer - No. By your system, where only full-time left wingers can play left wing, we have nobody. Are you suggesting we don't bother with a left-winger? When Vassell had the ball on the left he looked like he could beat a player or too, which is more than you can say for Heskey. Oh, and go fuck yourself..." on 19:12:18 06/02/02 Sun

[> [> [> [> Whatever. The main point I was trying to make is that Heskey definitely shouldn't play on the left wing. Personally, I think Vassell has the best transferable skills to play in that position, but Ashley Cole could certainly do a job of sorts there too. -- EVG-Kyriakin, 19:33:49 06/02/02 Sun (62.7.76.10)

[> [> [> [> [> Well you're entitled to your opinion but to suggest playing Vassel in midfield just seems bizarre to me. Thing is we can only go with the players available - if Ericson is going to persist with his long ball game then surely he has to change the front two. I think Vassel may miss out in the next game (not his fault - he did well today considering) in favour of Heskey and Owen. Argentina will not get caught out by a long ball up to two small forwards - they play too deep defensively. The only way to beat them is to pass the ball from midfield to the flanks or run at them with pace. -- tactics, 19:44:42 06/02/02 Sun (62.6.101.59)

[> [> [> [> [> Cole could do "a job of sorts" !!!!!!!!!! Eh ? Can you not get Sky TV down there or something? Have you never seen Ashley Cole play for Arsenal? I'm sorry but you are way off the mark if you think putting Vassel in midfield ahead of Cole is a good idea. -- onlooker, 13:53:20 06/03/02 Mon (210.242.164.150)
