FORMER England and AC Milan striker Luther Blissett is to join York City's coaching staff.

Club chairman John Batchelor says the appointment is a "real coup" for the club as it adds international experience to the club and his knowledge will be of huge benefit to the playing squad.

"Luther was part of the Watford squad that worked its way from the old fourth division and into the top tier of English football. We want to emulate that and believe his experience will be invaluable."

The 44-year-old international will start his new role in time for pre-season training. He has been in discussions for some time with the chairman, having met through his interest in the British Touring Car championships in which Batchelor and his York City Racing Team compete.

He was in the directors' box for City's last home game of the season, against Bristol Rovers, prompting speculation that he might have a future role at the club

Blissett made a record 503 appearances for Watford scoring 186 goals, another Hornets' record, as the club performed its meteoric rise through the divisions. He earned 14 England caps and a multi-million pound move to AC Milan.

Following his return from Italy, he served as a coach and reserve team boss at Vicarage Road.

Blissett will share coaching duties with assistant manager Adie Shaw and will report to manager Terry Dolan.

Batchelor says that Blissett will concentrate on coaching City's attack.
