In reply to: Marz 's message, "As the sun begins to set" on 10:12:54 02/06/02 Wed

When Tristan woke up, he was alone. The spot beside him was still slightly damp with perspiration, so it had not been empty long. He pressed his palm against the side of the pallet, and it was still warm to his touch, that same, familiar musky scent seeping into his senses. Most of the smoke had cleared from the tent, so that he couldn’t really smell anything but Marz’s recent presence hanging languidly in the air.

He rolled onto his back again and yawned, pushing sticky hair out of his face. Oh gods—sticky hair. Marz had probably hightailed it to the lake as soon as his eyes had flown open. Tristan closed his eyes, still too drowsy at first to get up and follow. He listened to the outside sounds; the murmuring of the people around the campfire, the cries of desert hawks in the air, the bark of a fox in the distance. The fox made him lift his head and stare through the cracks of the tent flap. It was nearly sunset, then.

Finally, he sat up, taking a good look around him at the mess he and Tia had made of the tent. A little laugh actually escaped him as he counted the number of cigarette butts lying in the sand, and the candy bar wrappers and one empty Pepsi can by the bed. One corner of the traveling mattress was actually burnt to a crisp, but when he tried to remember what that was all about, he only managed to bring on a slight headache. Served him right, anyway, for getting high with more than just himself.

A smile came to his face as he gathered up Marz’s boots and swordbelt before slipping outside into the late afternoon camp. It was hard for him to express his feelings about Tia, and how excited he was that she seemed to like spending time with him. He didn’t make friends every day, and scarcely knew how to handle the emotional impact of discovering he had one. Briefly, he missed Naiomi, his fellow dragon and sometimes confidante, but even he couldn’t remember having as much fun with her.

Momentarily, he felt guilty about having fun with someone else besides Marz, but the feeling passed. They didn’t always have to do everything together, right? But I wouldn’t mind if we did, he thought in a small mental voice, the guilt hitting him for different reasons again. He was too dependent on Marz, and knew it. The only reason he was able to have fun with Tia was because she’d been trying to get his mind off how close they’d come to losing Marz.

The thought troubled him, because he was fairly certain it was unhealthy to feel like that about someone. He’d become virtually obsessed with Odarin when he was younger, and now he felt that same feeling creeping up around him now. He highly doubted Marz felt so strongly about him—Marz, who’d known countless lovers before him, even if he hadn’t actually been in love until now.

Tristan sighed and told himself to get over it as he made his way to the pond, bending down and splashing water onto his face, both to wake him up and clear away the Pepsi residue. He stared at his reflection in the rippling water for a few seconds, hair sticking out all over as usual, and suddenly felt dirty all over. On a whim (after first checking to see that no one was around), he pulled all his clothes off and jumped into the water. It would be nice to have some soap, but the water still served to wash all the dust and grime off his body for now.

Back on shore, he dried himself off with his shirt before pulling his pants and boots back on, buckling his sword around his waist as well. He waved his damp shirt in the wind a couple times but decided to wait a few minutes before pulling it back on. Lastly, he picked up Marz’s boots and sword and trotted toward back toward camp.

On the way there, he passed several other tents, one of which was obviously being currently occupied. The low moans and murmuring voices coming from within told him exactly what its occupants were doing, making him blush slightly and hurry along out of earshot. He hoped he and Marz hadn’t made that much noise last night, but was almost certain they had. The thought made desire flood his body, and he had to walk stiffly and slowly for a bit before he could snuff it out.

A smile came to his face when he reached the campfire and saw Marz sitting all by himself. Tristan dropped his boots and sword next to him and sat down, leaning over impulsively to give him a kiss. Lust flared up in him again, but he did his best to ignore it.

“What?” he asked, his grin turning slightly abashed as Marz gave him a surprised look. A couple of the Jann and centaurs smiled at them, and he tried not to notice.

“You know, I was thinking,” he continued, his mind quickly seizing on something else. “About what happened to you…” He couldn’t remember clearly if he’d explained it all properly earlier, but was sure Marz would interrupt him if he hadn’t. “Well I don’t like it, but I think you should start practicing those chakra things as soon as possible. I refuse to let what happened today happen again. Ever.”

A stubborn look had come over his face, although he preferred to think of himself as determined. “There’s Erlic,” he said, nodding at the man sitting by himself on a rock in the distance, “Whenever you want, you should get him to start showing you how to do it. Properly,” he added, turning slightly red when he thought about how he’d encouraged Marz to do it on his own. The results hadn’t been too pleasant, although fortunately, Erlic had arrived quickly to set things right again.
