Rowan did a poor job of hiding his grin when Tia smacked him. It didn’t improve her disposition any, though fortunately she didn’t stay mad for long. Something over his shoulder caught her attention, and he turned, equally curious, as he watched her climb the wall, nimble as any shado apprentice, toward the glowing, moon-like object.

“Catch,” she said, tossing the glowing disk toward him. He caught it easily, turning it around and around in his hands to examine it. It was obviously some kind of lantern—strange that it still worked after all these years. Maybe this wall thingie had some sort of preservation qualities to it or something.

All thoughts about the wall and the lantern fled his mind as he shown their newfound light upon their surroundings. They both stood there gawking for several seconds, staring in shock at the oodles of gold and treasure lying strewn about, ripe for the picking. It didn’t take long for them to snap out of their stupor and begin scooping up everything they could find, though.

Rowan lined his pockets with gold coins, rings, and other findings until they were almost bursting. He also stashed several of the scrolls about his person, guessing that maybe they might relate to more hidden treasures throughout the city. He yelped, however, when something hot and sharp suddenly bit him in the arm.

“Sorry,” Tia said, doing her best to put out the fire that had apparently shot out of that new wand of hers. He raised an eyebrow and pushed her hands away, not wanting her to get her fingers burnt. “No problem,” he chuckled, flashing her a smile. “I like a lotta fire in my women.” He tried to look stupid and swaggering, hooking his fingers in his pockets and winking suggestively at her.

Tia soon caught sight of more items of noted interest, and he was more than happy to be dragged alongside her as they finished exploring the place. Before he could start to wonder about how they were going to escape, though, a ladder suddenly appeared.

His protests died on his tongue as Tia leapt ahead of him, climbing the rope ladder as nimbly as she’d scaled the wall. He would have preferred to go before her, just in case something nasty was waiting at the top—although why he should feel so protective of her was beyond him. He was pretty certain by now that she was clever and tough enough to handle almost anything. That was just one of the things he thought was so great about her.

He nodded as she helped him to his feet, agreeing that they were definitely not anywhere near where they’d started. Sudden noise to his right made him palm a nearby rock, though fortunately Tia stopped him from using it.

The noise turned out to be nothing but a silly dog, and he was very glad he hadn’t knocked its brains out with his rock, since he was kind of fond of dogs. He always kept hounds at the manor in the country, so he and his friends could go hunting, and thought privately that there was no better animal in the entire world than a friendly, tale-wagging hunting dog.

“Nice doggie,” he muttered, patting the dog affectionately on the head. At Tia’s urging, it took off in the direction it had come, leading them directly to Isobel, who was staring into a window.

“Looking for us?” Tia quipped, causing the other woman to turn swiftly and stare at them in surprise. “Don’t tell me you’re the only one looking,” Rowan added, breaking into another grin. “Oh no, Tia! I guess nobody else loves us!”

He laughed, wrapping his arms around the tiny thief giving her a teasing kiss on the forehead. It seemed he’d spoken too soon, however, as he could hear the sounds of voices just rounding the corner. Soon, Jeremy, Laurel, Saras and the rest appeared, the genie looking awfully tired for some reason. Rowan almost passed out from laughter when the dog suddenly took off toward Laurel’s cat, sending the yowling creature clawing up to his sister’s shoulder, where it crouched hissing and spitting.

“Can it, furball,” he called to Mikoshi. “Our new friend just saved our lives. That’s a lot more impressive than spitting up hairballs all day, I should think.”

He laughed again when the cat glared its yellow eyes at him. He still had his arms around Tia, and he leaned forward to whisper into her ear, “If she decides to attack, I’m using you as a shield. Hope you’re okay with that.”
