Erlic was glad that he was able to explain the theory of the Kami to Laurel. He didn’t know how she would accept this form of belief, but even though it was part of his heritage, he hoped that she would at least understand the concept of such beliefs.

“Oh yes, Master Erlic,” Laurel had stated in a way he didn’t quite understand. “It would be most unusual to anyone but one such as myself, I suppose. But all creatures are a druid’s natural friends, you see.”

Erlic understood the principal of druids, and their affinity for anything relating to nature. He had traveled with druids before, and appreciated their concern for the wildlife. It wasn’t his intention that creatures shouldn’t be attracted to druids, rather, that a ring might be misconstrued as a gift by the animal, which wouldn’t have any prior knowledge of its magical workings.

He was surprised, however, that she actually accepted his suggestion for the cat’s name. To him it only made sense. Perhaps that was why he always thought logically rather than from the heart, or soul. Perhaps he would gather some insight as to the workings of the female mind from Laurel. He appreciated her company, her conversation, and most of all her attractiveness, even though at times she refused to admit to her beauteous nature. But that was her prerogative, and he would allow her that, if nothing else.

He wanted to speak to her further about the situation when Barry came flying overhead, shouting out something about a man in a mirror. Erlic exchanged a glance with Laurel as both of them got to their feet, and walked over to the area Barry was hovering over.

When Erlic got there he got a good glimpse at the mirror, along with the figure that was trapped inside. He waited patiently as Laurel preceded to use her magic to either free the individual, or gather more information about the mirror. Erlic received the impression that whatever Laurel had tried, failed to work, and he could tell by the puzzled look on her face. He also thought that breaking the mirror would prove more harmful than beneficial.

Erlic watched with intrigue as Mikoshi looked up into the air where Barry was hovering, raising a paw as if to swat the skull down but to no avail. It then proceeded to dig around the edges of the mirror.

Ravin had entered the picture, and was trying to figure out what the commotion was all about. “There’s a man trapped inside the mirror,” Erlic informed his fellow thief.

The younger thief peered carefully over the mirror, and was quite startled to actually see a person within the mirror. He stepped back letting Erlic do something. The guild master simply smiled for he knew that Ravin, and magic, didn’t mix at all. Ravin preferred fighting, and dealing with substantial, and concrete issues rather than attempt to figure out magic.

Erlic stared at the mirror, and at Mikoshi. Something the cat had done plagued his mind as he continued to walk around the mirror examining it from different angles. He would have used his chi, if he knew exactly what to do, but considering the circumstances, that issue was a dead end. He knew nothing about magic, and could only employ certain offensive, and defensive maneuvers with his chi. Past that, he really didn’t know what to do.

He continued to stare, not so much at the mirror, but at the frame of the mirror. He decided to look up at Barry, over at Mikoshi, and then back to the mirror, as if searching for an answer. He stooped down, and took a closer look at the frame of the mirror. There, in minute detail, was an inscription of sorts, but it was difficult to make out. What he could discern from what was inscribed, and from his knowledge of the Nerombian dialect, was something to do with the casting of shadows.

He stood up, and looked at Laurel with a very puzzled expression. The answer was there but he simply couldn’t put his finger on it. “The only thing I can make out is something to do with the casting of shadows,” he explained to Laurel. “But I don’t know exactly what that means.”

That’s when he decided to continue to circle the mirror, hoping to find some evidence of what to do. He brushed away more sand, and discovered some tiny gems at the outset of the frame. “Help me brush away the sand from frame,” he stated to Laurel, who immediately started to help out. When they were done, one could tell the frame was lined with tiny gems on the top, and bottom of the frame, and nowhere else.

So? There were gems, but of what use where they to the man in the mirror? Erlic continued his pace, and suddenly stopped. He moved backwards one step, and then forward. The look he cast at Laurel was one of perplexity, and one of bewilderment. He looked down at the cat, and that’s when he spotted Laurel’s shadow being cast onto the ground from the sun. He quickly glanced at the mirror, and noticed that the top gems were bright while the ones at the bottom were quite dull.

“Could it be?” Erlic stated somewhat loudly, as he rummaged though his backpack for the device he thought he would need. He quickly pulled out his communication mirror, and hoped that the answer was soon in coming. He studied Laurel’s shadow, and glanced again at the shining gems on the top of the frame. He angled the mirror toward the sun until he was able to reflect the sun’s rays onto the bottom most part of the frame. Unfortunately, only a few of the gems started to shine. He continued to move back, and sideways trying every angle of the mirror to get it to reflect the sun’s rays onto all of the gems.

Finally, after trial, and error, Erlic managed to get all of the gems, with the sun’s help of course, to shine. Immediately something started within the mirror, as light from the top, and bottom gems, started to make their way down the sides of the mirror. The guild master wasn’t sure what was happening, but at least something was transpiring. Within moments, the mirror was outlined in a bright light that surrounded the entire frame.

By now everyone had moved away, including Erlic. The frame no longer needed his assistance as it continued to grow brighter, and brighter, eventually getting so bright that no one could look at it without shielding their eyes. Suddenly a bright flash erupted from the mirror as everyone turned away. When they chanced to look back, there on the ground, where the mirror once was, stood the body of the man that was entrapped in the mirror.

Erlic stooped down, and was surprised to find Mikoshi by his side. “Thank you little one for your help,” he stated to the cat. Perhaps it was the cat’s pawing into the air, possibly indicating the sun’s rays? Or perhaps it was the cat’s brushing away the sand. In any case, Erlic felt it was the Kami that had supplied him with the answer. He had but to think how to harness it, and put it to work.
