When Valhorek insisted on checking her leg, Isobel expected a more physical examination, not the strange mental sort of checking over that the man seemed to be doing. She wondered briefly if it was not an excuse for him to look at her in these clothes, but he did seem to be looking at her face and leg, not her chest, so she relaxed and did not make any sarcastic remarks to him. He announced that she was healing well and she smiled and started to walk away, toward a group of Jann women who were doing something around one of the fires. “That’s a very nice outfit you’re wearing,” the healer commented as she turned away. She grinned and looked back over her shoulder at him, throwing him an unintentionally alluring look as a lock of hair fell over one eye. "Thank you, doctór," she said and hurried on her way.

She approached the Jann women and spoke of her need for less revealing attire, but was frustrated to get blank looks from them. As she tried to explain the matter, it soon became obvious that the women were becoming insulted by her implication that their clothing was too skimpy.

"Excuse me," she told them. "I did not mean any disrespect. It is the men that I am with... I was merely worried that they would find my attire distracting..." she held up her hand as the largest woman's eyes grew fiery. "I realize now that this is a foolish notion and I apologize for any insult you may have taken from my most stupid and unthinking comments." The women looked almost satisfied, so Isobel smiled and hurried back toward the tent where she could see Justin still standing guard. She was somewhat embarrassed to hear the Jann women giggling as she left. No doubt they considered her boorish.

As she approached the tent she steeled herself for one of Justin's lewd comments, but oddly the merc simply nodded to her and said stiffly, "Congratulations."

Isobel looked puzzled and murmured, "Thank you," as she ducked inside the tent.

"Well, Señor Ravin, I am afraid you will simply have to stomach my unappealing appearance a while longer..." she broke off when she realized that Ravin was not in the tent. Alakbar snored quietly on his pillows, but there was no sign of Ravin.

She sat down on her own pillows, looking through the pack she had managed to procure from the Jann. Though their hosts considered it a small pack, it was larger than her travelling pack and she had a change of clothes inside (though they were no less revealing than this one). She also had managed to secure a tin cup and plate and eating utensils, all a bit oversized but better than nothing. In return she had given the Jann woman who had given her the items a turquoise necklace which she had brought from back home.

She lay back down on the pillows, resting a little before their journey started. It was nearly sunset and she could hear the desert crickets beginning to chirp.

Well, if the men could not get used to her wearing such clothing then that was their problem, not hers. She smiled slightly. Besides, it was not altogether unpleasant to know that they desired her (except the disgusting pig Justin - she would prefer to seem repulsive to him). Still... she had no intention of becoming involved in any relationships. These people all seemed to have trouble relating to each other on those levels, anyway, so she thought herself safe from such entanglements.
