Erlic watched carefully as Valhorek tended to those injured in the party, and was thankful he had made the choice to send Eremis back to the tavern, in exchange for the current healer’s services. He had always been amazed at how Val managed to deal with each patient with the same preference, and care as another patient. He watched the man duly tend to his work with a passion he would probably never realize.

Erlic had also looked around, not only for any chance of attacks from the vultures, but also the surrounding terrain. It would be a good idea to simply rest here for an hour before continuing onward with their expedition. He gathered up some dry brushwood, and after using some flint, quickly started a fire. He was thankful for the queen’s thoughtfulness in providing all the provisions they would need.

“We’ll rest here for about an hour before continuing,” he announced to the group. “The java should be done very shortly.”

With that he approached Isobel who had made the comment of getting off to an exciting start. He simply smiled at her, and asked her to follow him. He wondered about the woman’s use of the term frio, and what the definition might mean. For now he was more concerned with getting his shurikens back. He took a sip of the wine from his wine skin, and then offered the drink to Isobel.

He turned to the woman, and thought for a moment before speaking, as they walked away from the group. “I didn’t know how badly you were injured,” Erlic stated, “and therefore had no idea in what condition you might be in.” He smiled inwardly at her use of the term men, and how she believed herself to be one of them. If nothing else the woman had quite a flair for being as forward as possible, and made sure that everyone, including himself knew about it.

“As far as you being one of the men, I simply expect from you what I expect from the others, no more, and no less. If I didn’t think you capable, you wouldn’t be here with us.” It was quite simple in reality, Erlic had gotten used to dealing with people who were quite acquainted within their field. It was that reason alone he had formed the Specialist’s Guild. Everyone there was someone he had traveled with at one time or another, and everyone there was capable of handling their own during combat, even though the abilities of each individual were so diversified.

Erlic stopped in front of one of the dead rocs. Since there were more dead carcasses on the ground the live birds, it would only be a matter of time before the birds migrated to this, as of yet, untouched vulture. He carefully pulled out the four star objects out of its hide, carefully wiped them, and then placed them back in a compartment on his belt. They were the distance weapons of choice for objects in close proximity. When long-range weapons were needed, he always relied upon his bow.

“One thing I’ve found out about adventuring,” Erlic stated as they started to walk around the perimeter of the camp. “There is never a dull moment, and there is also something new one can learn from the experience.”

His master had reiterated those words countless times, drilling it into his head. Life itself was always a continuing learning experience, an event that was wrought with countless challenges, and adventures, whether it was in combat against vile creatures, or whether it was the mastering of something as simple as flower arranging. If he didn’t learn something new on a day-to-day basis, all of his mentor’s teachings would have been for naught.

He turned back to Isobel. While sitting behind her on the roc, he had time to get a closer look at her sword, and realized that it really wasn’t that good of a weapon, and wondered why she chose to use it. “I happened to notice the sword you employee,” Erlic remarked. “Do you use it because it is an heirloom of sorts, or because it is the only weapon at your disposal at the moment?”

He knew her other short weapon was of good caliber, but for some reason the sword she carried held nothing special about it. Perhaps she would enlighten him as to her reasoning.
