All this time Valhorek had been watching with interest the various events taking place in Queen Kazabet’s palace. One thing he was certain of, and that was that whenever anyone traveled with Erlic, there was never a dull moment. Being in Neromba only accentuated that feeling, for the healer had traveled its lands before, and had gotten quite accustomed to them.

Isobel was certainly a charmer in some respects, and could definitely prove to be a dangerous woman, if she chose. But still, Valhorek sensed a common ground between her, and the rest of the group. From what he had learned in the past, newcomers, especially strangers who didn’t trust other people, normally turned out fairly well.

The floating skull intrigued the healer even more than Isobel did. Of course he would have been the first to admit that the female fighter was quite beautiful, but looks were mainly an outwardly trait; it’s what the person had on the inside that intrigued him the most. But this Barry character was totally unlike anything he’d ever seen before. He could only surmise that the use of the language by the skull was of another plane possibly, for the language was quite foreign to Val.

The healer had watched everyone’s reaction to the new woman, as well as the skull, and realized that the different personalities attached to each individual were quite unique. He’d have to get to know them a bit better before truly approaching them, unless of course they were injured.

Valhorek was basically an average person…well average is a bit played down. He had taken on many various odd jobs during the time he’d left home, and eventually had taken a liking to healing. With the help of many doctors, from various lands, he was able to expand his knowledge of the trade, employing the various healing practices of each land as he saw fit. He had stumbled on navigation quite by accident. It was during one of his excursions in Neromba when, through some form of competition, wound up winning a ship, complete with crew. He was fortunate that one of the members of the crew knew common, and began teaching him the arts of captaining a ship, as well as the arts of navigation. With the ship he was able to sail whenever the urge hit him, to various far lands, where he would employ the help of other physicians in order to increase his knowledge of the healing arts.

Being a healer required that Valhorek have a good understanding of human nature. Without it, the ability to explain principals to his patients would probably have fallen on deaf ears. It was important that he be able to explain, or in some instances, demand, what he wanted his patients to do in order to survive. Only a few times did he have to resort to an actual physical form of violence just to get the notion through his patient’s thick skulls, but luckily, it didn’t happen often.

The healer was about to get up, and join the others when he spotted the woman stumbling back against her chair. He immediately noticed the way she clutched her arm as if in pain. He would have helped her immediately but she made her way toward him, and introduced herself as Sarra.

“I’m Valhorek,” the healer stated. “And don’t ever ask me if a wound is a bother. Let me be the judge of that. Here, let me help you sit down.”

Valhorek couldn’t help but notice that the women in the group were quite beautiful. Laurel seemed, although he didn’t know for sure, like one who was extremely knowledgeable, and assured of their abilities. Isobel, and Sarra, both seemed capable of giving any man a run for their money. Tia didn’t seem the fighter type at all, rather, more on the thieving side of nature based on her build. Of course he could be wrong about everything, but those were his first impressions. Sarra had the look of someone who had been on her own for a while, and was quite capable of handling any adversary.

Once Sarra was seated, Valhorek cleared a space on the table, and unrolled his bag of medicinal tools. He took a careful look at the wound, and realized immediately that it was infected. “You really should have seen me a lot sooner,” the healer stated to the woman, keeping a smile on his face. “This could have gotten a lot worse, but I’m sure I can take care of it.”

He took a dry cloth, dipped it in some water, and cleaned the surface of the wound. He observed the wound once it was clean, and noted the lack of puss that normally oozed out of a wound if it was severely infected. He was quite satisfied with this, and applied a salve to stave off any further infection. He then took a small vial, and poured a bit of the liquid onto a clean cloth. “This will numb the area for a moment so that I may suture it close. Not to worry,” he stated with a smile. “It won’t hurt.”

He applied the cloth directly to the area, and waited. He had gotten this from his physician friend in Kor Toi. It seemed that they had discovered an herb that could numb an area of the skin allowing a healer to actually stitch wounds without inflicting any pain. Val gently touched the area around the room, and when Sarra didn’t flinch, immediately got out his catgut, and needle. Slowly, and methodically, he stitched the wound with tight, and neat stitches. Once it healed, it would hardly leave any scar behind. Satisfied with his work, he applied more of the infection fighting salve, and then wrapped the wound with clean bandages.

“That should do it for now,” Valhorek stated. He handed a small pouch to Sarra. “If pain gets worse, just take this with some water. All it is are a special mix of herbs. You might feel some discomfort in the arm, but I think you’ll be fine. Considering we’ll be on the road, see me tonight, or the next time we camp, and I can take another look at the injury.”

Val nodded at the woman as he continued to put everything back in order, and re-rolled his medical bag. It was the one thing he had gotten extremely attached to, and rarely went anywhere without it.

“How about we join the others outside?” The healer asked. “And by the way, what is it that you do with this group?”

He helped Sarra up, and the two of them walked outside.
