Laurel laughed aloud at the antics of the floating skull who called himself “Barry,” as he continued to converse with them and try to explain his reasons for being here. She found the mention of the Planes to be interesting, since she had some knowledge of traveling that method herself, but apparently Erlic was a little off with that suggestion. She stifled a smile at the leering looks the skull kept throwing at all the women, particularly herself and Isobel, and couldn’t help it when another laugh escaped when Tia stood up to loudly declare her womanhood, sticking out her offended breast like an angry little sparrow.

While Tia was chirping about being fully female, Laurel turned her attention back to Isobel, who was conversing with both Ravin and Erlic. She raised an eyebrow when Erlic commented, “Very well done,” in reference to something Isobel must have said, probably concerning Barry. That man possessed such dratted condescension in his manner, it really irked her to no end!

I don’t envy poor Isobel having to put up with his patronizing attitude, she thought, turning her nose up before she realized what she was doing. I can’t believe he hasn’t even taken it upon himself to address me since last night. I refuse to even think of letting him kiss me again until he does!

“Insufferable man!” she muttered, but then she remembered that she was trying to take things easy from now on. Stifling her annoyance, she planted a shining smile on her face again, determined to not come off as being such a stuck up fool anymore. Let Erlic dwell alone in his philosophical mental wanderings. Laurel was tired of being spoken down to. She had every intention of getting to know the other members of the group and being considered as an equal among them, as well.

When several of the others began filing out of the dining room, she followed, smiling to herself when she saw Tia offering her hand to Rowan. Her silly little brother had best watch out for his heart and his head around that one! She would take him for a ride if he weren’t careful, bringing him up one minute and down the next. But it was none of her business, and since she was no longer a gossiping little snob, she wasn’t going to go sticking her nose where it didn’t belong, or offering advice that simply wasn’t wanted.

When she got outside, she noticed the awful grimace on Isobel’s face, as the dark-haired woman stared in disgust at the lounging figures of the dead Rocs. Laurel chuckled as she walked up to her.

“I can’t say the smell diminishes over time,” she remarked, “But maybe this will help.” She dug into one of the many pockets in her cloak before pulling out a sprig of sharp-scented herbs. “Just press it to your nose if you feel another gag coming on,” she added dryly, giving the woman a wink before moving on.

She approached Ravin, who seemed to be regarding the large undead Roc before him with some discretion. “Too bad you don't come with instructions,” she heard the heard the thief mutter in between sips of his ale. “Verbal instructions that is since I can't read.”

Laurel’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “Do you mean to say you can’t read?” she asked, coming up behind him. “Oh,” she added, feeling slightly ashamed, “I did not mean to eavesdrop…but really, there’s nothing to be ashamed of, you know. Many of my mother’s buyers could only read figures, and some of the farmers couldn’t read at all.” She shrugged. “I suppose some have no need of it, and as I couldn’t milk a cow or plow a field even if you promised to pay me in gold, I’ve nothing to say against it.”

“I could teach you, if you like,” she continued, a bit slyly. “I have tutored people in music before, and I don’t think it should be too difficult to help a clever man learn his letters. Perhaps, in exchange for a lesson or two, you could drop me a few interesting tidbits about your friend Erlic.” She sighed. “You get along with him quite well, it seems. Yet I can’t seem to get two sensible words out of him. Why must he speak to me as if I were a child, Ravin?”
