I do disagree about the definition of heroic. I do think that you have to do something to be heroic. Otherwise anyone who is victimized would be heroic. And if doesn't matter how a victim reacts to being victimized, if she is heroic no matter if she's stalwart or if she lies on the floor crying or if she slits her wrists to get out of the agony, then the word doesn't have meaning.....

Also, I see heroism as doing something exceptional for another person or for a cause. I know this is getting off topic, but if I, for example fell into a freezing body of water and somehow got myself out, I wouldn't be heroic. But if I dived in to rescue a stranger, I would. I even think that if I dive in after my own child, it's not really heroic exactly, because it's out of self-interest - because I love my child.

Anyway, interesting conversation! I don't think I've thought that much about heroism before.
