I'm sure read somewhere that Susan Sarandon was interested in CoD after being approached. Someone heard she was a big fan of the books and approached her. I think the only role available to her would be the one she played (unless she was offered another one). I'm sure I also read that a few parts to her character was changed after Susan and the director discussed what to do with her character. It helps that big named actors are interested in doing things like this esp. when they're fans of the books like Susan Sarandon and William Hurt.
