Subject: Clarification about possession

Hi.
I have a question about Baron Harkonnen's relationship with Alia.
In Children of Dune, the baron was a memory with a will to have physical manipulation (and for some odd reason, as a memory, knew Jessica was his daughter), right?
He wasn't a ghost or some spirit from the afterlife.
