In the very first chapter the chapter heading mentions that Arrakis' rotation is at a right angle to its orbit (for a comparision, Earth's is tilted at 23.5 degrees), almost as if it were artificial. Maybe it was set up as a sandworm sanctuary by some outside alien force. And now after millions of years they are coming back for them, chasing the Honored Matres infront of them into the Old Imperium. If this were true, won't they be surprised when they find that Arrakis was destroyed.

Then again, I could be way off. Any thoughts...
