Subject: BG - BT link?
In reply to: Ghanima 's message, "A wild theory" on 15:44:29 04/23/03 Wed

I was wondering if there is possibly some ancient link between the Bene Gesserit and the Bene Tleilaxu? First of all--however somewhat elementary--they share the same name: Bene. It is probably simply an ancient word adapted by both societies without any collaboration in the matter. However, the fact that they both adapted the word suggests that they at least share the same background. This background is more than likely religious, considering both groups have great dependencies on religion. The BT seem to be a fanatically religious people, where the BG enjoy picking apart the structures in religion and exploiting them for their own good. Maybe that doesn't really mean that they're both from the same origins, but there's a bit more than that.

As mentioned in Ghanima's post (see the previous message), the BG have the profound ability to control internal body chemistry. I believe the Tleilaxu women also had this ability. In the Prelude to Dune, and probably in one of the last of Franks novels, we learn that the Axlotl tanks are actually the BT women. They essentially use their women as 'breeding machines' to produce gholas. Somehow they are able to control their bodies in such a way that allows them to create a genetically-exact clone of a human. It probably doesn't take any special talents--other than the female ability of giving birth, which is quite special indeed--to be the host for some reproducing cells. (Then again, I'm an Engineering major, not Biology.) However, the fact that the BT were able to use their woman axlotl tanks to produce Amal suggests that they did in fact have the ability to control their body chemistry.

Now back to the point I was attempting to make. Both the BT and BG use the name, Bene. They are both deeply religious in their own ways, and they both have the ability to control their body chemistry. More specifically, they both eventually use this ability to link the memories of many beings into one. The BG have Other Memory and the BT have the serial memories of the Duncan gholas and others like him. The fact that both societies' existances are seemingly for the same purpose suggests that they could be secretly collaborating in the events of Dune. It is more likely, however, that both societies were created for the same causes and ideas. In conclusion, I believe that there is some deeply-rooted link between the Bene Tleilaxu and the Bene Gesserit.

This also provides a motive for Ghanima's idea that the two groups eventually teamed up in the scattering.

Or maybe I'm simply loosing brain cells due to lack of sleep. Let me know what you think.
