One thing that has intrigued me about the BGs discovery of the Axlotl technology is that they could begin to explore the technology themselves, using the internal body chemistry talents they have had since before Paul even existed. So maybe a group made up of scattered BGs, Tleilaxus and Spacing Guild navigators could develop the ability to internally produce spice using body chemistry, and navigate. A human ship! It would take all three working together, the Tleilaxu for the Spice, the BGs for the body chemistry, and the Guild navigators to show how to fold space. Imagine being able to travel through space of your own free will...Now make the human ship out of someone with the Atreides genes and you have a no-ship! Without needing machines or worms...

But I actually really doubt that's how the scattering happened. It is just a nice idea I thought I'd share.
