When we went in today she was just coming from lunch. She had two apples on her lap. We pushed her down to her room and started chatting.

About five minutes later she said, "Where did these apples come from?" I told her she must have grabbed them at lunch, since that's where she'd just come from. Her response was, "Oh, did I? What time is it? Hm. Well, I guess I must have." It wasn't 10 minutes since she'd left the lunchroom and she had no idea she'd been there!

She was using toilet paper for tissue. I asked her if she'd used all the Kleenex we brought. She said yes. I checked, and there were two full boxes in her drawer! She didn't remember me bringing it...or think to check her drawers for it!

Then I found a whole bag of treats I took her the day before we left for CO...two candy bars and a box of Little Debbie cakes. She'd totally forgotten I brought them...someone put them in a drawer. Once it's out of sight, it's forever gone! I put them in the plastic treat container on her dresser so she'd remember she had them. So, she went a week with no snacks because she didn't remember we'd brought them or think to check her drawers to see what was in there. Sheesh.

At this point I'm wondering where this is going to end up. Four years ago she couldn't remember things like what she'd seen on tv the night before...or how to dial a phone. Now she lives in the minute. She still remembers people...and her life up to probably 5 years ago. If she hangs on for another 5 or 10 years I just don't see how that can possibly keep being true. I wonder if with dementia like hers it's possible that you can just get to the point where you don't make memories at all...and then that's where you are for years and years until you die.

Sad, eh?
