I totally understand what you mean about homeschool families and I am not offended. When we decided to homeschool 10 years ago that was one of the things that I really worried about, the way my children would be outside of a traditional classroom setting.

We have gone way out of our way to make sure that our kids do a lot of outside activities and are around lots of different kinds of people. That makes me almost a total outsider in most of the homeschooling community.

Within the homeschooling world the parents have made the choice for reasons other than mine. We get the ones that are totally into the religion and do not ever want their children around people who don't believe as they do ever.

There are also the total academics. Those families have the kids that do nothing but study day and night and they don't watch tv, movies, listen to music or do anything mainstream. While I am impressed by the things that their children accomplish I think that they need more variety in their lives and these children are going to be sad and lonely in the long run. We had to deal with a whole lot of those families at the homeschool science fair and that was one of the main reasons that we did not enter this year, that and a change of who was in charge. It is true that 2 of the kids from our group went on to win at the International Science Fair but these were the strangest children you would ever hope to talk to in your life.

I also run into a lot of people lately that only keep their kids out of traditional school for a year or so and I really don't understand that at all. Then those same parents wear it like a badge "I homeschooled my child" and they run around telling everyone in sight and then a year later put them back in school where the kid is totally lost and then the parent gets mad about something at the school and pulls the kid out to homeschool them again adn they do this cycle over and over again. I really hate those people.

As far as homeschooling, when we started it really was the only option that we really had. The school near us was getting worse and worse and no matter how I volunteered or offered my help or anything like that it wasn't helping. The instruction got worse and worse and I believe that the school lost it totally and we could transfer to another school, except my kids couldn't because they were considered white although they are registered as white/American Indian. We tried the local charter schools, privateschools (we couldn't afford) and everything else.

Then Robbie was punished for breaking up a fight (because he shopuld learn to mind his own business) He was punished for finishing his work too fast and trying to work ahead, among other things. Right after we pulled them out, within weeks the principal was shot in the head by an angry former student.

Most people I meet and even a few I know haveno idea that we homeschool because I don't mention it. During school hours we are home not out and about. I really do understand what you mean about the homeschool kids.

Sorry to ramble so long. The funniest thing people tell us is that our kids don't "act" like normal homeschool kids. I always think that is really funny.

Christine
