I question why they want washable.

I'm kind of leaning toward just letting the teacher deal with what I got. They want parents to bring all the supplies to school on the 14th...and school doesn't start until the 17th for the K kids.

Here's the game they're playing. Until a couple of years ago our district always made class assignments on the end-of-year report card. So, the kids left in June knowing which teacher they'd have in September.

Then everything started changing. They used to welcome parent requests. Now they're not allowed. As a result, they don't give out class lists until 2 days before school starts. That way parents don't have time to chat and then call the school asking to have kids moved.

Still, I think there either needs to be one list or multiple lists. Not a list that then changes depending on the whim of the school!

Oh, and Brandie, if you plan on having Lauren attend public schools at all you really need to have her start with the other kids. I hope Christine doesn't mind this comment, but my experience has been that homeschooled kids who enter in mid-elementary have major issues adapting. I used to end up with them in my Title I classes regularly...only to find out that they could read just fine, it was the whole culture of school that they didn't understand.

Honestly, a BIG part of my problem with public education is that I never went to public schools. The idiotic rules and such are beyond me...we were spared government interference because we didn't get government money!

That said, pull her out for your trip! Different teachers have different policies. I've always been willing to send work ahead of time with the warning that plans change and I can't guarantee that the kid won't miss something, or come back and have to redo something. However, the teachers I worked with when I was in 4th grade at Southern have a policy of refusing to send work until after the kid returns from vacation!

Just find out what the policy is and work with it! Trust me, kids can survive a vacation even if it's a month or so long!!! And, the younger they are the easier it is to pop right back into the groove!
