we have so many freaking irresponsilbe kids and parents at my school that we could send a million words home AND they'd still not be able to locate them. There are many teachers here who will no longer provide more than one anything to the kids because they want them to learn to keep up with it or suffer the consequences.

However, they give them some strategies for getting what they need. Help them brainstorm how to get the information. From a friend etc. It's never just you'll have to find them which leaves the average 5th grader shrugging their shoulders. We've had kids copy permission slips etc word for word from someone because they lost theirs. By the end of the year our 5th grade is very resourceful - LOL.

I've been lucky and we've had good teachers so far - all the teachers at Ryan's school do buddy spelling. They take the words from their writing that are mispelled and that becomes their individual test. They pick out 10 words on Monday, practice them all week in class and then a buddy reads the words to them and then they read their buddies words on Friday. It seems to work great. Sure did take the pressure of spelling tests away because the words tend to be on each kids level and interest kwim? I'm going to try it next year when I teach 2nd grade. Remind me when I'm pulling my hair out that I liked it as a parent LOL.

I'm sorry that he's off to a bad start. I hope it gets better and I hope he finds his words. Does he know anyone in class well enough to copy them down or call and ask for the list?

Now that Ryan and Nathan are both in school we are scrambling to keep up with all their crap. BIG HUGS!!!!
