Of course each child is different and what might embarrass one wouldn't to another so you know your daughter best do what you think she would like.

When you give the talk about periods ask her questions and see what she wants to know. When you take her out to buy stuff ask her what she wants. I'd buy some tampons just in case she wanted to try them too. She may be too embarrassed to ask for them. I don't think 12 is too young, she's having her period and deserves the choice just like the rest of us.

I'm planning to have a little celebration. I want to buy Rachel something special so maybe a piece of jewelery, something she can keep forever. I'm also going to buy her a calendar. We may go do something else special to celebrate her becoming a woman, sort of thing. It all depends on Rachel and what she will feel comfortable doing.

Funny thing is I was talking to my DS about being a man type of thing yesterday and I asked him what special thing he wanted to do when he became a young man at 13. He said he wanted to paint a mural like his dad! I thought it was a wonderful idea! Wonder if he'll stick to it.

Anyway I just wanted to say congrats to your DD and to you! Don't worry so much about it, just tell her what you think she has to know and let her know she can ask you anything. I don't think these things are as traumatic to girls as they were to us when we were younger. Oh and celebrate this wonderful milestone!

Diane
