Subject: X or Offroad?

Ok, so I really think my dream is to buy a Brand New Offroad. huh, NOT in the budget. Sooo, can I get a used X model AND upgrade it to sort of an offroad version? I like basic but I want it equipped. I want something I can beat the crap out of but still take the family on a nice picnic. You know...out in the desert on on some hills somewhere. Im not looking for something that LOOKS like it might go off the path but WILL go off the path and still get around. Anyone have some advice?
