Subject: X won't Roll-start?

I'm back with another 04 - 4 cylinder 2WD 5-speed X question. The thing won't roll start! It never has, and shortly after buying it (new) the entire crew of 'technicians' couldn't tell me why...

One reason I bought it was for the two miles of gravel county road we live up. As far as adsorbing the washboard conditions, pot holes and knurly rocks it works great. I love the high ground clearance and it's ability to craw, without spinning up our fairly steep gravel driveway.

There's a little game we play though on this road. Instead of eating the billowing dust from an oncoming vehicle that refuses to slow down, we'll match (or exceed) their speed - blow by them, turn off the engine, coast through their dust, then engage the engine in 2nd or 3rd by 'roll-starting it.' We've always had manual transmissions, and every vehicle until now has roll-started.

I'd also like to leave it aimed out and down the driveway (after dropping the kids at their bus stop down the road) and have my wife roll-start it when she takes it to work. This works fine with our Toyota Tacoma 5-speed ... but the X won't roll-start!

Can any of you guys tell me what the problem is? I've assumed it's some 'idiot-proofing' electrical lock-out that I'd never find and have no idea where to start ... but as I'd like to save the starter, and be able to roll-start the thing in an emergency - I'd like to by-pass or 'fix it.'
