• Cant you get the system to send out e-mails to people who post more than once a day and lurkers saying oi cunt head pay up?     • Much as I love Gwlad, and you have every sympathy for all of the agg you go thru, I'm not sure compulsory subs is the way to go - gwlad will lose it's diversity (e.g. would non-Welsh posters pay to join?) and you guys will open yourself up to a whole world of pissy hissy fits of the 'I don't pay good money to have my team/fave player/etc criticised' brigade. It's just that the nature of the relationship between Gwlad and the readers changes when you move from free to pay. Soz that's not more helpful, and all imho (and experience). We have these emergency whip-rounds from time to time which patch up the cracks (and some people pitch in substantial amounts, from what I recall), but the whole thing dies off just as quickly.         • I agree with Ad. I pay monthly, and have upped it as of next month, but I am also a member of another non-rubgy site that charges a sub and the atmosphere changed straight away. You will get all of the shit Ad mentioned and more. How about something like a Gwlad 100 club, where each person (openly) contributes £5 a month, with a draw for £100 prize each month?           • TBH, I got very pissed off with one poster last night, but there is no way I would quit the site because of that person. There are far more benefits to outweigh the few bad ones. If we can get 100 regular posters to contribute £5 a month, then it will be sorted. I can imagine the subscription/access issue will cause it's own problems. But in this day and age, c'est la vie.         • Don't know mate. just think that compulsory subs will change the nature of the site, and that what is meant to save it will significantly change it. I would/will cough up monthly, just not sure how many would, and how many of them I'd want to share space with. Like I said, next time Phil gets on his high horse Gwlad could lose a few contributors, leaving them in a position of potentially banning someone cos he affects revenue. Actually, that might encourage me to pay more;-). I know it's a problem, just not convinced compulsory posting subs are the answer. Maybe if you post above a certain level e.g. first 20 are free. that would keep the random element of it going I guess, and things like the 6 nations would turn into a decent revenue source.           • I can't see an alternative here. and oh btw the server is officially knackered to the point whereby its unrepairable :( Septic has been looking at it and more or less condemned it. Here's what I am going to do...I am going to order a new server that is fit for the job. I don't know total costs yet but I will try and get away with a minimum specced machine - 30 odd USD. I'll them have to move everything over and cough fo the things that can't be done remotely. We will have to move to subscriptions as soon as that box is up and running , if it doesn't wash with the punters that is fair enough, I will be out the door and someone else will have to pay . No hard feelings either way mind - if it doesn't work and pay for itself then its dead as far as I am concerned. Interestingly enough - why do the other sub-sites feel the need to ask for subs? • Trying to work on the MySQL problem now - with not much success may I add :( Anyway - I'm looking roughly at a couple of hundred quid for the move, maybe more could be less - one time payment. I can't out a figure onthe admin cost as I've no idea what state the machine will be in when I get it back - if we decide to go ahead, and I don't see much alternative? The monthly cost for a decent server is likely to be 399 USD per month which is a significant jump from the 149 USD now, but I can't see away out in the short term . Hopefully we either, get enough in donations to carry the increased cost or have enough to purchase our own server ( there is reduced cost for own server in their datacentre). I don't think we can lok forward to a Gwlad future without a subscription service and relying on the sme people time after time doling out money for this.   • Cer, thanks for what you're doing. For fucks sake there are well over a hundred people who post regularly - every day! Sharing the total cost ($399 a month?) would be about £2 a month each, if that. That buys you a hell of a lot less in the shops than the laughs and info you get from Gwlad. Ceri shouldn't have to put his hand in his pocket (he'll have to do the techy stuff mind) - it's our site, our community, let's stump up! Can't see how that isn't totally fair.   • Oh yes - have sent a one-off donation. Once you have a decent pricing estimate on overall running costs (h/w. s/w. bandwidth,labour) then you should post it up and then periodically post how much is received each month. People's consciences should do the rest. I don't think we should go to sub-only - a closed site is usually less diverse than an open one - but if we can get enough regular income from the "decent regulars" - and we can accept that some people can't/won't pay then that might just work.
