Subject: Any gardeners out there?

Hi
I have two window sills that are in direct sunlight most of the day and don't know what sort of things to put in window boxes, I have painted outside on my little patio as I don't have a garden and want to 'pretty' it up and don't know what sort of things that like sunlight, the thing is it can get really hot as it is a sun trap, I tried flowers in pots years ago but they just give up in the heat.
Any ideas?
