You know, I was actually thinking about Jimmy Reilly the other day when I was going through my tape collection and stumbled upon a couple of old Days episodes....and it made me realize why I liked his work so much back then:
I felt like a lot of his stuff was great: The Sami/Austin/Carrie triangle, the Kristen/John/Marlena/Susan thing....
It seems to me(now correct me if I am wrong) that Reilly had some sort of justification for what he did, topped with great payoffs. For instance: Carrie's face is injured because of some boxer's vendetta with Austin. She turns to Lucas for friendship, who falls in love with him. Carrie's scheming sis, Sami, falls for Austin. Through all of this, Austin and Carrie reunite as Sami goes through some things(i.e. discovering her mother's affair, bulimia, rape). Because Sami feels like she's been cheated in life, she goes after what she wants.....and that's how the character pretty much remained under Reilly tenure.
I don't feel like the character of Sami was a one-dimensional character. It could have been because of the acting, but I think some of it could have been attributed to the writing as well.
But Passions falls short on it's character development. Theresa is a socialite who climbed the ladder because of her fantasies/psychotic obsession with Ethan Crane. That's pretty much it. I don't know what DRIVES Theresa to do the things she do.
And that goes for Kay, Simone, and every other character on that stupid show. Three months should have been ENOUGH time for a well written character to have some sort of development. It's been almost FOUR YEARS and I still don't understand what drives those characters to do what they did.
I think if Reilly killed off or shipped characters that we didn't need out of town and focused on developing characters we wanted to care about, and then launching his tales. If Passions were guided under me from the very beginning, I would have focused on Theresa wanting to climb the social ladder by bedding Julian(sans Champagne), and after a wedding, Julian exposing his evil side to her.
And I would have definitely killed/shipped off Simone, Charity, Hank and Grace.
Passions's problems could be as a result of NBC. I remember a "Farewell" Interview he gave to SOD after his exit from Days and he said, "I don't think the new show will be wild or wacky." And the actors have to be from NBC's Casting Department. Even talented vets like Amelia Marshall and Andrea Evans seem to do hack acting jobs to fit in with the mold of the show.
Anyway, on Days, Reilly had clear good/evil lines, which is a downside. A good soap will have people arguing till the end of time about things(i.e. how fans are split between Brooke and Stephanie on B&B, how fans were split between Meg and Maria on Beach, Sonny and the Mob vs. AJ on GH). But during Reilly's tenure on Days, at least there was justification for character's actions and comeppuance for most of the villians.
Things can't get any worse than they are on Days of our Lives....Can they?(Thinks of Another World's last few years..) come to think of it, NBC might tell Reilly to create some kind of freaky murder mystery where they kill of Alice, Maggie & Mickey. After all, those suits want to drive the price of the show down.
I think Reilly will blow his chance to pull a Bell, and will end up without a job when it's all over with. But witht he way daytime recycles it's writers, it probably won't be long until he gets another.
