Another one bites the dust!

ABC has canceled its horrid soap called "Port Charles".
No word on a replacement once the series airs its final episode on October 3, 2003. IF ABC doesn't replace it with another soap, which is likely to happen, this may cause VIACOM to examine GL's fate.

NBC canceled "Search For Tomorrow" in 1986 leaving NBC with only three soaps. They got 4 again with "Generations", then 3, then only 2, then 3, and now only 2 again. Although something happened this time. NBC's slimmer line-up of DAYS/PSSNS elevated NBC out of last place and into the # 1 in the hot 18-34/18-49 female demos. NBC's strategy of dropping its weakest links, and then focusing on whats its got left, thereby giving more time and resources for its slimmer line-up, helped lift NBC to # 1

Did ABC/Disney execs look at what NBC did and now want to do the same? Sure seems like it. PC is ABC's weakest link, with PC gone, ABC could very well take back the # 1 spot in 18-49 demos. ABC could be planning on using the money that would have been wasted on PC and investing it in AMC/OLTL/GH.

Now what will the execs at VIACOM do? If ABC doesn't replace PC with a soap, this is HUGE! Traditionally it was only CBS and ABC being the real players in daytime, they were the LEADERS. IF ABC drops down to only 3 soaps, embrace the NBC stratgey, and it works? GL is finished!
VIACOM might not even wait to see if it works, they know it worked for NBC! If CBS's main rival ABC can drop down to 3 soaps, VIACOM will believe CBS can and should as well. Its a monkey-see-monkey-do business.

PC's cancelation has little to do with ABC Daytime President Brian Frons. Frons has been PC's biggest supporter EVER! From online "articles" its the senior-level ABC execs and Disney execs who had enough of PC, they believed the show was a waste of money. So no matter how much Barbara Bloom (CBS chief soap exec) wants GL to remain, it will be decided by the top cats at CBS/Viacom.
