I think that's BS. YES, Frons has supported Port Charles, but when he came aboard the ABC Daytime ship, it's numbers were crappy. Not to say they weren't before he left, because it has never been able to surpass it's daytime premiere numbers.
But one of the reasons why Frons is one of the many idiots to blame is that he knew this cartoonish/vampire garbage was NOT working for Port Charles. Hell, even when I was the show's biggest supporter during Karen Harris's BRILLIANT stint as Head Writer, the show was staying afloat 2 million viewers, but not the quickie fix Shapiro/Behr(two MORE idiots to blame) wanted.
Frons had to see that the show was averaging less than 2 million viewers a week and something HAD to be done to stop the carnage. Whether that was cancelling PC, premiering another soap or what, he HAD to know that vampires were NOT working for Port Charles.
Instead of listening to the longtime fans Port Charles drew, Frons further propelled this show into the ground by giving those hacks Esenten/Brown/Carruthers free reign to further f*ck up this show.
This is the reason why Port Charles didn't succeed. It didn't have a chance in hell to be the HOSPITAL soap it was supposed to be.
I hope Nolan North gets a job on another soap. With all the crap this man had to put up with at this show, he DESERVES better. The fans of Port Charles deserved better.
As far as GL is concerned, CANCEL IT! Get rid of it before it's too late!
You're onto something CC, if CBS sees that ABC Daytime's Demos are better with a three soap lineup(In addition to Guiding Light being shifted to mornings in some markets because of the highly successful and bandied about Dr. Phil), they'll want to get rid of GL and not even go through the effort of launching another soap probably until The Price Is Right is cancelled(And all these game show analysts angling Todd Newton as host better stop. Price is Right should expire when Bob Barker retires or dies, which will probably be when he's 155. But THAT'S another story).
And the good news for Bold and the Beautiful fans is that their soap would probably stay a half hour if GL were cancelled.
And there's another thing to think about: With PC cancelled, B&B will be the ONLY first run half hour soap on TV.
But I'm digressing. The bottom line is that ABC never saw Port Charles for what it could be. Yes, it didn't look great on paper(Daytime soap opera spinoff set in same town of sister show), but that doesn't mean it didn't have the potential for greatness.
Nonetheless, the rest of ABC's Lineup looks like a disaster. AMC's Bianca getting raped by Cambias. OLTL's Flash telling Joey that their relationship would be ok because their mothers are only "half-sisters." GH's Pregnant Carly being kidnapped, while those of us who LOVED Jessica Ferrone as Lydia will have to suck up the loss and get over it(LOL to last part).
I wonder since the affiliates already know this, will they even bother airing PC's last episodes when syndie season starts in September? The wisest decision for ABC would have been to let the show tape a finale arc, allowing that space open for midseason replacements.
Anyway.....I guess that's my POV.
