Not to take away from CBS's soap opera consistency, but with Paul Rauch killing Guiding Light, it is soon doom for cancellation. I don't even recognize it anymore, every character has changed SO much and there are so many NEW characters.
It's hard for me to fathom Guiding Light without the crazy Spauldings, the heart-at-home Bauers and the hash slinging Coopers.
I think once CBS thinks the shocks of Another World have worn off, they will kill Guiding Light(Probably in 2005) and if Viacom or New World isn't smart to offer a wad of money too good to pass up to take As the World Turns away, P&G will slowly AND surely kill it, too.
But, CBS has had ratings success all these years b/c they left B&B and Y&R alone and left the company to do it's job.
I cannot say the same for NBC and ABC. NBC, which has, for years, tried to make clones out of their "successes" like Days's possession storyline and AW's Vampire Storyline. Passions's Teenaged Overhaul and Days's Defiant Youth(I have never seen so much disrespect, but I will put that in another post.)
ABC uses the same old writers and producers in EVERY show! Loving/The City producer Jean D. Burke is immediately shipped to All My Children after the cancellation of The City. Jill Faren Phelps and Megan McTavish, after "demo success" with One Life to Live was shipped to General Hospital after Wendy Riche's exit.
And what the HELL is up with Port Charles? That is most awful garbage I've ever seen on TV. Period. Even Alison Barrington(Poor Erin Hershey) couldn't save this show it's so far down the crapper. Blood sucking vampires stealing out of blood banks at GH? Time Changing to the 70's? MEMO TO ANGIE SHAPIRO: PC is a spinoff of GENERAL HOSPITAL that focused on the lives and loves of YOUNG DOCTORS!!!
PC, IMO, was the best it ever was between March-Late November 2000. PC utilized almost it's ENTIRE cast one way or another and integrated them in the hospital. Lucy and Scott board members at GH. Kevin going to back to psychiatry at GH. Alison Barrington working at a hospital.
Spyder Games wasn't a media darling by any means, but, hell, at least that show was CONSISTENT and stayed true to itself.
If the networks and the owners of the shows would quit tinkering with the format and actually let the WRITERS do their job, soaps wouldn't be the pathetic mess they are now.
