I just found this site . I live in canarsie now I am 16 and on 81st street and flatlands. I go to south shore high. I have read about people who grad here back in 74 or 76 . They talk of the good old days. They imagine that those here before them in the 40s werent happy and those after neither. The fact is those from the40s saw their neighborhoods going DOWN wen the newbies entered in the early 60s. The 40s people talk of the good old days wen they were in high skul in 1952 in canarsie .As well the 70s people graduated in 70 or 75 talk of their good old days. They see the 40s people as no where and the 80s people like me as no where also.I think canarsie is great. We hang out , bowlin, pool, the corner, we aint got no nosher but we got BENs on flatlands. We aint got THe Brook pool but we got another.We dont watch mary tyler moore but we see seinfeld. We got the plaza ,that hasnt changed. We will get old and 1 day be 45 in 2034 and we will talk of our old days in the neighborhood as you who graduated in 74 talk of yours.

For your information, young Ian....there were NO high schools in Canarsie in the 40's. As for SSHS, the first graduating class was either 73 or 74. The Canarsie "old days" of the 70's (my generation)were amazing. Society and the culture in general were different, better. Your neighbors kept you in line. If you were a dick, you caught a beating, not a bullet. If you were a good athlete, you got chosen to play...if you sucked, you didn't. We learned that life was not fair. We learned valuable lessons in our formative years.We had street smarts but could still get a good education in the NYC school system. Now, Canarsie high schools (both) get rated as the worst and most vile schools in the city. Hell Ian, every other word you wrote was misspelled and the grammar was sorta dysfunctional, eh? You would have liked the 70's. It was a good time to be a teenager.

LET ME JUST EXPLANE SOME THING TO YOU LITTLE ONE CANARSIE IS NOT WHAT IT USE TO BE YOUR LUCKY TO LIVE THAT LONG AROUND HEAR I GROW UP IN THE LATE 80`S AND US TO HANG OUT IN THE AREA WHERE YOU LIVE IT`S NOT A NICE PLACE TO LIVE ANY MORE YOUR LUCKY TO WALK TO THE STORE AND NOT GET ROBBED OR SHOT.I`M 27 NOW AND I SOMETIMES GO THOURGH THE OLD AREA IT`S SO DEAD AT NIGHT EVEN IN THE DAY.THE AREA WAS OFF THE HOOK WHEN I WAS GROWING UP EVERY BODY KNEW ONE ANOUTHER NOW IT`S NOT THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE YOU MISSED OUT ON THE GOOD DAY`S AROUND HEAR SORRY.GOOD LUCK OUT THERE !!!
