I found awebpg called classmates.com. you gotta pay to see emails. but free if u just want to be found by those who DO pay. I put myself onthe list and included my email as part of my last name thus Im gwen shermanAthotmail.... the response rate has been great. At least 80 percent listed in classmates never pay so they wait passively to be found by payers. Since there arent many payers its like a list of names untouchable thru email. But i guess my idea worked. i got plenty emails from frends who had gotten emails from the webpg that a new classmate had joined. Instead of seeing my name but no email they saw my email and now we chat. I will begin paying classmates in january inorder to upload fotos as well.

Saturday mornings used to be sacred back in canarsie. We watched the tv and saw great cartoons all morning. Cartoons we couldnt see during the week. They just werent on. the networks RESERVED them for saturday mornings. It made saturday special. Nowadays on saturday ,if you watch, youll see that most channels carry news interview or cartoons they showed as well any weekday. So a kid on saturday morning chooses not to watch tv since news isnt so interesting nor is watching reruns of what he had seen on wednesday morning or thursday at 330pm after school. Even cbs shows nick jr on saturday morning. A kid with no cable can watch cbs since it will all be new to him but thats it. He wouldnt watch the other channels to see news . A kid with cable as most are, is stuck. The networks show news, cbs shows what he has already seen on nick jr cable and the other cables show news and old movies. Nowadays its internet playstation and dvd.I thought saturday morning was special when I was a kid, What do you think about it? then now.

If you lived in canarsie, no matter your age or where you live now, you have many memories. I sometimes think of the old days. I am so happy where I am in my life, yet those where the best days. Everyone was there for eachother and you knew if you walked home late someone was always sitting in front of their house and they kept an eye out for you. Staten Island or anywhere else will never be that way. The adults hungout on the steps (late). Everyone said hello to eachother. Those were the days. The good old days. One thing that is sad is my children will never experence a close knit neighborhood like canarsie was.

My 11 year old son Michael was hit by a car and killed on May 28th 2004 in front of our home, The driver a 27 year old female hit him and didn't have a license and had violations as long as could be. Monday she is going to court because she only got a mestormeanor. What I would like all of my fellow Canarsians to do is pray that there is justice served. And that Michael didn't die in vain. We chat a lil and she even sleeps in my ol room. Her dads the 3rd owner. Back in 89 i was showing the place to my kid wen suddenly the front door opened and a guy asked who we were. I tol him i used top live here and he invited us in. I took fotos and even had 1 to show him of me in 1970 at my bar mitsva party in HIS basement. Was a really emotional walk. To reenter my ol house. Same sliding glass shower doors were there. the fotos are weird cause i see me in my kitchen in 70 and again in 89. my son in my livin room and me at same age in same living room. WOW. watatrip.

when we were kids we could watch a tv show and fall in love with the characters . We believed they were as we saw them. There were no parralel shows with true story interviews available. Mary tyler moore was sweet on her show and sweet in real life. Now of course 20 yrs later we see MTM on nik at night and there are real interviews with her talking about her drug problem back then ,the fights with ed asner and even one can see outakes with the director yalling CUT and then mary telling ted to fuk off cause he read his line too late. I no longer have a crush on her as I used to have wen we originally saw that show.And kids today maybe 12 who see it as reruns also see the interview and know the reality at the same time they get introduced to the show.However this reality not only is part of repackaging old shows but has become part of new shows too. I mean a new show goes on and imediately the kids can catch the ugly outakes and reality interviews . Todays kids dont have thre innocents or the chance to fall in fantasy love with a character. I used to believe the charcters were real and I wanted to hang out with them and be friends with them. But todays kids see a new show and immediately they see that its bull and just a show. They are robbed the fantasy of imagining themselves with these characters. Maybe its cause OUR generation controls hollywood and loves remakes from our choldhood. That wud explain the overkill on 1970 shows being remade. Maybe these same execs know that this could be sick sl they purposely sabotage it by showing the behind the scenes of all 70 shows intertwined with that show. They force themselves ans us to SEE REALITY. Its a therapy they feel they need after realizing they are recreating their own childhood shows and we maybe need. this therapy too. THe problem is that this reality stuff now accompanies even NEW shows .In REALTIME kids see that the new character is just an actor.What next? Telling 2 yr olds that bigbird is just a guy in a suit? Elmos a hand? Or the voice of tommy pickles is an adult actress? Will kids be left to fantasize? Or is it time for this generation to be matured more quikly? Online one can catch the dirt on any new shows actors day one. Kids see that its false , they are forced to see that its false. We knew in our time but the reality was kept far so we cud easily believe the fantasy. Did you know that the house from i dream of jeanie was the same interior as in bewitched and in partridge family? I never caught that wen I was a kid. hints of reality .But today, they stuff it in kids faces along with the baby bottle.

Im a bit turned off by Glenns comment that Canarsie kids who grew up to be doctors did it for $ or status or cause thats wat jewish moms wanted their sons to do. After HS many of us had no idea as to what to do in life. Since we didnt mind school It made sense to go to Brooklyn College. i mean if youre going to look for a direction in life why not do it 3 hrs a day and avoid the old 9 to 5. looking for direction in an 8 hr a day job can kill you. Stay out of the ol 9 to 5 as long as possible.In college if you see your goal major in it then work .But if you dont see your goal then stay in college cause its smart to avoid the 9 to 5 as long as possible if you dont know what you want in life. Med school is the longest study so thats the place to go. But the jig is up at 26. My frewnd barry didnt know wat to do after hs but he hated studying.He went to the job market 9 to 5 to find his direction. He never found it but at 26 he had kids and couldnt search longer. He had to stay put in watever job he had at the time. I had to leavev school at 26 cause there was no more.I got a job as a doctorand the 9 to 5 had finally caught me. The money is good but it would be better to be in a job you like you choose even without college. So med school was is a hiding place for those who dont know what they want. The idea is if you dont know wat to do its better to have a 9 to 12 than to 5 day, big vacations and plenty of girls .If there had been a nother major at college with more yrs like sanitation control that wud be where we wud have gone.

Anyone remember a business teacher at Canarsie HS by the name of Marty Geber. This guy was a little nerdy and lived with his mom. Wore bowties and taught business math courses. He was like my very favorite teacher. He kind of took me under his wing and would share his lunch with me usually lox and cream cheese on bagels and Sanka. Wish I knew what became of him. I went to school at Canarsie but lived in Brownsville.

I lived on 85th between K & L. Suddenly moved away to Virginia in 1980 - more of a parental choice - I wne kicking & screaming the whole time - LOL!
Went to 276, started at Bildersee, Went to 211, started at Canarsie HS & left.
Had lots of good times with lots of differnt groups people!

Your comment about my living in california is strange. I mean when I told you I live here you said why was I WAY out there. The truth is there were 600 people from canarsie at last years reunion. 600 whom had graduated from canarsie or south shorebetween 1965 and 1990. Thats alot. In fact your reaction was similar to my reaction in 80 when a guy on my block moved to jersey . I thought why the heck way out there. Or to long island,why so far away by yourself. The truth is in the mid 80s a slew of easterners came out here. First as job transfers then as friends of those who had come for job transfers. Of course maybe some came alone for warmth knowing nobody here or came with friends to live here. I mean its hard coming alone just for better weather or easier living. So most came for transfers or cause they knew someone . Infact in the 30s most from odessa came in mass few alone to new york. I came in the second row; i knew someone . He had been transfered here by his cpa firm and I came to visit. I liked it and moved here. Found a job a wife a mortgage etc. So the real question is, why the heck are you back there, in the old country?

Just hear from an old frends whom I hadnt heard from since 83.We were the best bak then. We were 4 ,playin basket everyday .He tells me gary diedfrom alchohol.Mitchell is a the mental hospital in phili ,has been for 10 yrs and my friend who emailed me is in prison for drug selling.and using.Im here on my fat ass living ok readin his mail and crying. Its lik yesterday we were all goin up for the bank shot; o mean that literally and figuratively. We played ball daily basketball and we played great. We also talked about life and jobs and money and success.Now in the blink of an eye Im married living the life of riley and the other 3? Insane jailed and dead.Wow.It stuns me to read that my x pal has a son already goin to college ,but it kills me to hear an x pal is already out; as in dead.I mean,I recall him studying all freakin night for exams . He did wat he was told.A nice jewish boy.The guys who have copyright on my memories are in jail or dead. Cud I have helped? I saw scott ddrop outa cillege wen I came hom from gainesville university. I lived in Canarsie until 1996. Attended PS272, JHS211, graduated CHS in 1971. I lived in Bayview Project-1610 E. 102 St. apt. 1D- until 1975. What a wonderful place to have grown up in. Knew so many people, shame how we loose contact with each other.

If you look at south shore high class of 74, you can see that only 134 have signed this webpage.There were almost 600 in that class. So the big Q is why arent they here? Will they be here in the future? Almost everyone has daily access to internet and everyone knows what a search engine is and how it works. And if someone thought about a possible canarsie webpage he she would be at the computer in hours anyway and would search on the word,a search which would easily lead here, no doubt. Its unlikely that they would decide to screw the idea ,childhood reminicing is addictive.So if theyre not here it can only be because they havent thought about it but will sooner or later. So there is a majority of old timers out there who one day will think ; maybe canarsie has something in the web and they will be here. The market potencial is for a future canarsie webpage 2 or 3 times the size of this one.We are looking at another 1ooo or 1500 who will arrive here. They will be the slow to think of it group. I mean my best friend from thre old days found this site 2 yrs after i did and I found it in its 3rd year. So not to say the old timers have already beenhere exploited it. Hi there all!!The Florida Marlins have a true Canarsian on their team. Pitching coach Wayne Rosenthal graduated from South Shore in either 82' or 83'. Even though I'm a Yankee Fan (Diehard!!!!!) its pretty cool. The year he graduated SSHS Baseball Team won the City Championship at Shea Stadium, and he was the pitcher. He was truly amazing!!!! Had his name flashed over & over on the scoreboard. He was picked up by the Texas Rangers as a pitcher in the early 90's, and now he's a pitching coach for the Florida Marlins. He was going out with my Best Friend Lisa Grudman at the time. We were kinda Baseball team groupies. If you have been watching the game they have mentioned his name often, he's the guy sitting next to the Fl team coach at all the games. I have a scrapbook filled with the teams accomplishments from those great years. Those were great memories!!! Now I must go watch the Yankees whip Floridas ASS!!!!!! Go Yanks!!!!!

Freaky is reading a comment here by a girl that she had grown up in canarsie and it was a great place when she was a kid but then everybody moved and the place went bad. Then i read that her address was my address and shes the kid who moved in to my house in 83. Her folks bought it from my folks . She grew up and went to college then she moved out and her parents sold to go to jresey .i thought the place had gone down the pot when we left but she felt great growing up there and says when she left it first started going down.Maybe the guy who lived on the land of my house before it was built felt the place went to pot when we arrived so he sold .Or maybe theres an objectivity to "going to pot" a natl standard.Or pot is in your head.

They left canarsie not because the place went to pot, but because their education went to the pot of gold. Canarsie was built to max in the 50s and early 60s for workin class. 25 yrs later the butcher had 2 grown ups.One a butcher also but who wanted a new house like he grew up in so off to Jersey. The second kid a doctor hadd lots of money so he could buy bigger than canarsie so he went to Jersey too.People left cause Canarsie was a trampoline town; built to max with no growth space for the future. I read about towns where adults are 40 and lawyers Cpa or doctors or butchers .Where their grandad lived and he was a shoesalesman. Where 4 generations stayed in 1 town no matter the $ they earned. The truk drivers son ,a cpa lived north of the park and the truk drivers son who was a brik layer lived east of the park .But we were emmigrants and trampolines were for us . Now this generation can land somewhere and put down roots.Where? calif florida. who knows.

Im from Canarsie 1974 grad chs.I just read the part of this webpage wher people from the 40s look for friends .Its wierd cause they describe a cAnarsie that I never knew.One guy says the old park where he played during his childhood in canarsie in the 40s was destroyed later when we he was in his 20s to put up a block of houses.That new block was my block. His childhood places from the 40s were bulldozed down to build my block. I never imagined that 10 yrs before I was born there were teenage kids in Canarsie playing ball in the very spot where my block would be built.I recall SSHS when it was a big lot Kids plAYED there too Im sure.Then a school was built there in 1970.Breakin some bodies heart.I guess there was a time when even my house wasnt there but there were kids there playing. Maybe sad to revisit in 61 what for them was "the old neighborhood" and find their place gone to make room for what today was my place.WOW. the 40s .

This is so great! This morning I spoke for over an hour to my old friend Meryle Adelson, We hung out in the 60s than later in the early 80s for a while and lost touch she moved to Fla, and I moved. We remembered the people and CRAZEE times we had hanging out in 272 park she knew my family , my brothers Mark (Couz-roy )and Micheal Kottler. We used to go to the fillmore and hang out back stage. We were remembering hanging out at the hotel with Terry Reid group, which was very funny except for the part when I was alone in he room with the 6'4 drummer who asked if I could get him ups., I said I dont know but I can get downs Qualudes! He stood up over me and asked do I look like a down man to you!? And I said uh no sir you look very up to me (help help help were are my friends Im going to get raped by this English rock star., I was 15 a little nervous, I liked Terry Reid anyway, finally everyone burst into the room "'ho wanta to smoke a joint yeeeeeaah!) That was just one of the many fun times

My father searching for his old friends from the 50's- 70's. Each was very special to he and my Mother (Maureen). Joey Lawson was my Parent's best man in 1958. Joe's Brother, Kenny, too was an attendant at their wedding ceremony. Joe Lawson moved to California in 1980 with my Father's family, then to Nevada in 1981. Rumor has it Joe returned to NYC after residing in Las Vegas for a number of years. Kenny Lawson resided in Gerristen Beach and Marine Park with his wife Kay. Joe has a Daughter, Jody and his former wife's name is Joann.
Joe "D" (Duniwitz) resided in Canarsie on 61st or 62nd Street. He cared for his blind Mother, and may have moved in the 90's. "Papa George" and "Rosemary" lived off of Kings Highway in an apartment building near the corner Pub. Unfortunately, I cannot recall their surnames. They were affectionately known as "Papa George and Rosemary" My father is ill and would like to have an opportunity to talk with any of these individuals. He lost contact with them after my Mother's passing. If anyone knows the whereabouts of these people or their families please contact me, or forward this information to them. Especially, the Lawson Families'(Kenny or Joe) My father has several important legal documents he would like to return to Joe or his family.

Im Rabbi Geltman from the temple Share Emeth in Canarsie where a boy named Steven Marcus received his Bar Mitsvah in 1970 and we are clearing our records and I have found his old Bar Mitsvah record .There is a note attached indicating that he had to return to the synogogue the Monday after his Bar Mitsvah to complete the ceremony as it wasnt fully completed .The families had to attend to a party. I guess the then Rabbi had told his parents to return and they forgot.As this is strictly a religious ceremony,and he didnt return,he can still see me to complete this ceremony ,it takes only half an hour and then I can list you as Bar Mitsvaed.However ,he at this time is not Bar Mitvahed and if he wants, he can contact me here.Its never too late!

I am an independent filmmaker, creating my first film
as a labor of love, outside of my regular job as a
Television Producer. The documentary is based on the
experience of Jewish families in the Catskill
Mountains during it's heyday.
There is no substantial bankroll. All of the
individuals working on the project are actually doing
it out of a common interest in the project or
as a favor(associates and friends).
We have been obtaining footage, letters, photographs
and postcards from people through their mutual
generosity, but mostly their shared desire to make a
statement about this cultural experience.
We pay all expenses to ship it, copy it, etc. We will
send all masters back to you (in perfect
condition!)following the duplication. As far as
photos go, you can easily send JPEGS(High Resolution if
possible). All people will be credited in the film.
We have already received a generous amount of
resources from people and we also have asked for
releases (from them) to protect all involved,
including the people who donate their footage.
We truly appreciate all of your assistance in this
project. Please stay in touch!

You're truly from Brooklyn if you can relate to any of the following:
You don't go to Manhattan, you go to "The City."
You never realize you have an accent until you leave.
You know and go to the REAL Nathan's - Coney Island!
There is at least one pizzeria within 1 block of your house and a candy store on the corner.
You love "Welcome Back Kotter" (and not because of the crisp writing or great acting).
You curse. A lot.
You know the difference between going with, seeing, fooling around with and going out with someone.
Private beach? What's that?
You've had a pigeon crap on your car and/or your head.
Your friends came over to hang out on the stoop.
You have no reason to go to Queens, except for Met games.
You know someone with mob ties.
Sheepshead Bay is for fishing and seafood.
There is a bagel bakery a few blocks away.
You can correctly pronounce places like Long I-lind, but aren't exactly sure where it begins.
Everybody knows somebody from the neighborhood, even if it is your mother's cousin's son-in-law's sister's boyfriend.
You walk down "The Avenue" and see at least a handful of the people you knew growing up.
The first bar that you hung out in when you were 15 is "so young now".
Kings Plaza.... how come we get the crappy mall?
You know what a "johnny pump" is.
It's not the "shore", its the "beach" idiot!

Canarsie residents: Remember that time the alien spacecraft landed in the cemetary on Ave 'K'. There were some kids playing hockey or something by the Jewish Center. I also remember the old Jewish guys getting upset because there were some big cannons being taken at his door. It was so freaky when I was walking my dog Apples, when the spacecraft landed. I was on my way to the Milk Farm and I almost went to the bathroom right where my dog did. I called my rineds on the phone, but by the time word got out, the little aliens left. I hope maybe someone else remembered this...let me know. X It happened around 97 or 98. Not sure...Mike Battalia was there too (Chubs).

I found this on a bulletin board and decided to try it.
A little while back, I was browsing through newsgroups, just
like you are now,
and came across an article similar to this that said you could
make
thousands of dollars within weeks with only an initial
investment of $6.00!
So I thought, "Yeah right, this must be a scam", but like most
of us,

where did everyone go? I lived in canarsie from 1976 until i moved to virginia in 1995. These are all people from around 1985-1993 possibly 1994. By that time i was already going back and forth to Virginia. if all these names mean something to you, then you know these were the best times in canarsie. even though they are just 1st names, If you were there, you would know.

where did everyone go? I lived in canarsie from 1976 until i moved to virginia in 1995. I can't remember everyones name but here goes. vito,juliet, frankie,lisa, joe,kelly, joey,debbie, mike,monica, alfonzo,alex, alex,allison, cherly, kim, amy, karen, cory, sharon, heather, donna puzio, donna recco, beth, denise, debbie (hawaiian). The boys were, Joe, Joe, Joey, Mike, Mike, Mike, Michael, Dave, Frank, Billy, John, John, Peter, Dennis, Jay, Patty Boy, and too many more........
These are all people from around 1985-1993 possibly 1994. By that time i was already going back and forth to Virginia. if all these names mean something to you, then you know these were the best times in canarsie. even though they are just 1st names, If you were there, you would know.
Hope everyone is doing great!!!!!!!! I know I am. I just want to see if anyone is still around. But i doubt it. i haven't been back in canarsie scince i left, But from what I've read on these message boards, It sure has changed.Have a good day all............................................

Are any of my teammates reading this message? I am looking for video footage of the Canarsie High School girls gymnastics team during 1968 and 1972. I remember another parent taped me on the uneven parrallel bars. Some of ny teammates'names were, Marlene, Marilyn, Olga and Miss Kessler was the coach. At this stage in my life, seeing this footage would be worth gold to me. I don't have anything from those special years and have been out of Canarsie for 27 years. I was in Leaders, too. My nic name was Rainy, but I would probably be most remembered as Lorraine Muzio. Please email me if you have any leads. Thanks

Anyone remember my Mom and Dad's bakery during the 1930-1950's.....also Reinhard's bakery on Avenue L? Remember the celebration Holy Family used to have, and they crowned King and Queen of Canarsie???? I married Jack Winters, who was king one year.......now we have 5 children and 11 grandchildren and live in Connecticut......My Mom, Anna Heinrich is 89 yrs. old and lives near us in Simsbury, Ct. Great memories of PS 242, the Log Cabin....Franklin K Lane HS and Bishop Loughlin HS...We have lived in Connecticut for 34 years, but Canarsie (the Old Canarsie) is still home!! Ann Winters

Comment: Believe it or not I did a google search on my old address in the can arsie and found an e mail which belongs to the present family living in my old house.I have sent and received e mails from the guy in the house , Walter .. I told him of the good ol days of hangin out at the bleechers at south shore, bildersee park, stoop ball and the brook.He said that it sounded like I was talking about todays canarsie and 80 street cause his kids do the same stuff.They have split session at south shore and his daughter hangs there all afternoon after class,his son plays ball at bilderss park and basketball near the middle ramp on 80 street.The only difference is that the brooks gone and now theres a new club near where the brook used to be, but the paddle ball still goes on.His kids dont miss the brook cause it went before their time.And they too play stoopball.From him,I got the idea that still today diff kids do the same junk we all did but 25 yrs later.I told him of the canarsie friends web pages where x canarsiers wax emotionally about when it was our turn in canarsie .He told his kids to have a look at the page and they did.They said that we did the same things they do today and its remarkable how the same hangouts still draw the crowds.Of course, the old bagel place is now a c.d. shop but they dont miss the bagel shop since it was before their time.Where there was a shule is now a chinese restaurant but they still have their church and great times at that place too.They also said that the page makes us look like ghosts from the past canarsie who gather and rattle their sabers and still haunt the place.I guess we feel the old place went to pot but in fact speaking directly to those in the pot it turns out they are happy as we were and the place is still graesed and in motion,kids go to 276,bildersee and hangout under the bleechers and walk to the new brook and play spalding stoop ball.He said lifes still good there and kids still play football in the backyard .And bildersee still has the spe program and still has milk fights .Wed like to believe we took the good times with us in our bags but we didnt.We return to visit and we drive through in our cars without stopping to talk to the locals so we leave feeling the place is not today what it was25 yrs ago.But maybe it is not canarsie that has changed except for the color of the people,maybe it is we who have changed.THOUGHTS?

Our one year anniversary is coming up. Although the honeymoon seems to be over for you now that the newness and excitement of us has worn off, I find myself still brand new in love with you. Hello. Does anyone remember the Neckonoff Family from Flatlands 1 Street and later East 83 between Glenwood and Farragut. My dad is Barry. My mom is Beverly (she was very active on the PTA's of PS 279, JHS211 and Canarsie HS), My brother is Jeff, my sister is Jodi, and I am Michelle. We were members of Seaview Pool as well. Jodi and I were also members of Emile Zola BBYO which met at the HES. I am posting this because I just spoke with my mom this morning and she is feeling nostalgic about people that we grew up with and is wondering where they are now. She does not have a computer so I am posting this on her behalf.

Subject: TWO NAMES? WHY?
Why do jews outside Israel shy from giving their kids Jewish or Israeli names? I know an American family that although non practicing ,gave their son the same Jewish name and REGULAR name; Baruch. They couldnt think of a good B name in english so they gave up and the civil name is also Baruch. The walls didn't cave in nor did the neighbors think they had become religious suddenly,nor did people think they were Israelis. Just an American Jewish Family, nonpracticing, naming their kid Baruch because theyre proud of being Jewish and love being Jewish. As Sean and Steven are names that came from some other ethnic group but are now quite American, maybe now Baruch will become as American. Can any Jew do this? Can all Jews if they want just give the Jewish name as also the American civil name? If so ,why do so many nonpracticing Jews not do it? Is it too Jewish? Are they afraid someone might think they have a black hat AND THATS A NEGATIVE IMAGE? I'M NOT RELIGIOUS BUT I TOO LOVE BEING JEWISH AND I NAMED MY BOY LEVI_AVIV My sis says only Israelis and very religious do that and although anyone can,its hard being the first.People will think youre a hassid and thats a negative image ,she says nonreligious Jews think the black hat is ugly and any name that might make people think youre wearing one, is unattractive.So Ill be among the first. I break new territory and say let all Jews, onpracticing,practicing and even aethiests who still love being Jews give their kids Jewish names and no more 2 names; a Jewish and then a REGULAR name.THE JEWISH NAME IS ALSO REGULAR, if we use it as such in everyday life by all Jews.

I moved on to bigger & better things in a nice southern beach town (it is wonderful living on a beach), but I am writing to say Canarsie aint so bad today - just different. Once predominantly Jewish & Italian, today's Canarsie is quite different. Yes, many Haitians but many other ethnic groups as well. There are even some elder Jewish & Italian families remaining. Remember Original Pizza on Avenue L? - still there and bigger (they expanded the store) & better than ever. Avenue L still somewhat Italian but rest of neighborhood has changed. It was sad the day a chinese take out replaced Grabsteins. Note, I have nothing against Chinese food - in fact, I love it - but it seemed wrong when that new sign went up at Grabsteins. But all that aside, my Canarsie is gone and so is yours if you have left - but that does not make the new neighborhood a bad place.
Todays Canarsie, not that unlike that of my parents, consists of a lot of young families. When I moved out, family to the right of me was asian with two children (real bright kids excelling at NYC schools). Family to the left of me a very young couple with one child both working (with husband working very long hours) to meet the hefty mortgage payments (2 famiy homes in Canarsie start at about $250k nowadays)- they always looked tired to me but were always friendly to me and they have pride in their home and take care of it. Young working families with kids who take pride in their homes and want the best for their children. Does this sound any different from our parents? Yes, most of us were Jewish or Italian back then and the Canarsians of today are often african american, haitian, asian, etc. but has it really changed all that much? I say not.
