THE PROBLEM WITH NEIGHBORHOODS CHANGING IS NOT THE NEIGHBORHOOD BUT, THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE UP ( THE NEIGHBORHOOD ). BACK IN THE LATE 80'S A FEW PEOPLE STARTING MOVING OUT WHICH MADE ROOM FOR NEW PEOPLE TO MOVE IN. A FEW BLACK FAMILIES MOVED IN - EVERYONE STARTED RUNNING ! WHICH MADE NO SENSE....
I HAVE A STORE ON AVENUE L ( HAVIN' A PARTY " PLUG " ) WHICH I OPENED IN 1984! 21 YEARS LATER - STILL HERE...
I STILL SEE SOME OF THE OLD TIMERS ,BUT, NOW CANARSIE IS VERY CARRIBIAN. IN BUSINESS YOU HAVE TO GO WITH THE FLOW or YOUR OUT. THE ONLY THING ABOUT BUSINESS NOW IS THAT WE DO MORE TRAVELING THAN BEFORE. THE NEW LOCAL POPULATION HAPPEN TO BE NICE, HARD WORKING PEOPLE AND YES THEY DO BUY FROM US. BUT OUR OLD TIME CUSTOMERS - WE HAVE TO TRAVEL TO LONG ISLAND, STATEN ISLAND, NEW JERSEY, EVEN PENN. THE MERIDIAN , KARL'S DELI, CANARSIE THEATRE ARE GONE...
MORE CHURCHS ARE OPENING UP.

I live in San Francisco, california now and had lived in canarsie from 64 to 88.

I went back a few months ago and yes, it has changed, I went to to my old house. An older man must have bought in after my parents sold it in 88. yes he was black. More power to other races who can afford to buy homes. So what if there are more blacks than whites there now. the seaview pool and yacht club did not allow any blacks in in 1970, it was a racist place. I lived right across the street and I know what went on. And live evols. Mr. Omar the bigot, needs a reality check.

canarsie is lik a trampoline..it opens to any immigrant group to live there, using the groups customs then it watches as they leave to suburbia and a diff group buys in.. the jews italians of the 60s were hard workin and independent. the haitians are too good people but different. they work harder than the jews did and education as a way up is seen differently. they break up a single house into 3 houses convertin the garage into a house...but thats part of their culture just as the jews erected backyard gates in the 60s to separate the houses.Dont go thru life as a color or a religion or an income level...Let life instead go thru you because itll be around long after youre gone.Canarsie can be visited in your head
