still hangin out -- Eric Shlanger, Beleive it or not I did a google search on my old address in the can-arsie and found an e mail which belongs to the present family living in my old house.I have sent and received e mails from the guy in the house , Walter .. I told him of the good ol days of hangin out at the bleechers at south shore, bildersee park, stoop ball and the brook.He said that it sounded like I was talking about todays canarsie and 80 street cause his kids do the same stuff.They have split session at south shore and his daughter hangs there all afternoon after class,his son plays ball at bilderss park and basketball near the middle ramp on 80 street.The only difference is that the brooks gone and now theres a new club near where the brook used to be, but the paddle ball still goes on.His kids dont miss the brook cause it went before their time.And they too play stoopball.From him,I got the idea that still today diff kids do the same junk we all did but 25 yrs later.I told him of the canarsie friends web pages where x canarsiers wax emotionally about when it was our turn in canarsie .He told his kids to have a look at the page and they did.They said that we did the same things they do today and its remarkable how the same hangouts still draw the crowds.Of course, the old bagel place is now a c.d. shop but they dont miss the bagel shop since it was before their time.Where there was a shule is now a chinese restaurant but they still have their church and great times at that place too.They also said that the page makes us look like ghosts from the past canarsie who gather and rattle their sabers and still haunt the place.I guess we feel the old place went to pot but in fact speaking directly to those in the pot it turns out they are happy as we were and the place is still graesed and in motion,kids go to 276,bildersee and hangout under the bleechers and walk to the new brook and play spalding stoop ball.He said lifes still good there and kids still play football in the backyard .And bildersee still has the spe program and still has milk fights .Wed like to believe we took the good times with us in our bags but we didnt.We return to visit and we drive through in our cars without stopping to talk to the locals so we leave feeling the place is not today what it was25 yrs ago.But maybe it is not canarsie that has changed except for the color of the people,maybe it is we who have changed.THOUGHTS?
