They don't do that anymore , at least not the way it used to be done.
Now it is all done surreptitiously behind the scenes with other than large armies in a traditional format.
Hopefully never again but as we all know those that don't learn from history keep repeating the same mistakes.

Right now we are winding down one aspect of the almost formal type in Afghanistan while still involved in all the brushfire conflicts that came about as a result of the radical Islamist Jihadists who declared war on US back in the 90s and have not decided it is a lost cause yet.
Instead they keep franchising out into the wider global scene with splinter groups and stand alone radicals or small groups of the same so you never know where they will crop up next and cause real havoc.

Do we want to be involved in a major conflict again ? NO not in the least , but will we get dragged in despite what we may want to happen ?

Too many unanswered questions and unknown quantities on the global scene right now to know what will happen in the future.

Last semblance of " peace " was during the imperial colonial period with the major powers fighting brush fire wars and enforcing " gunboat Diplomacy " around the world. It worked during the Victorian era but bred more harm than it stopped in the long run and we are getting the feedback now in this century.
