This woman's got more baggage than Leona Helmsley, fer chrissakes.

I count a couple of fish and game men among my past acquaintances. In fact one, Dennis Anderson, recently retired and he was a terror on short bass tickets. I probably prosecuted more people for short bass tickets than any other man in Iowa. These fellows were of the opinion that folks who pull that "my kids are starving for a chunka meat! That's why I'm poaching!" were all driving Ford Explorers and were drunks from Missouri.

I do not hunt, myself, although if offered venison I will not refuse-it's tasty stuff, organic, and nourishing. I really am not interested in hunting at all, but if there's a case to be made for it it would be to stock the larder and nothing more.

The whitetail deer here are overrunning the state particularly here in town where most folks do their hunting in the back of the supermarket. But that's no reason to declare a jihad or a killfest like some folks think. Some of our local towns allow bowhunting in the parks and people who live on the edge of the park are getting tired of watching mortally wounded does stagger throu their yards looking like target butts at an archery range.

Nope. I'm more like my friend Roger, who was telling me that he used to bowhunt and one day he was sitting in the timber, it was raining and it was about dawn. Suddenly he thought "What the fuck am I doing here?" and hearing no good answer he walked out of the woods and sold his bow and his gear.

Our old place backed up on a ravine that had a fair number of critters using it as a thruway. I was feeding witetails last winter, one of whom was a good looking six pointer. As I poured out the cracked corn, peanuts and topped it with kosher salt I said "You and your ladies are safe here, fella."
