I have great respect for hunters. I am one.

But I was trained in the tradition of native American and early American "table hunters" to hunt, as you say, for food to fill the freezer - and to waste nothing, and to respect the spirit of the animal that gave its life so that you might eat.

Is that the attitude you see reflected in this photo?

My local Franconian friends did hunt - but not for "trophies." I'm pretty sure they would not have approved (as Palin does) of hunting wolves from helicopters for "sport."

One of those who taught me about hunting was a woman - who filled her tag every season, knew how to use every part of the deer and taught me that though careful, thoughtful, respectful hunting could be challenging and rewarding, it could never be "fun."

I support responsible, sustainable harvest of wild animal populations. Palin in this photo and in her published statements, looks and talks more like the "flat-land road-hunters" who invaded the White Mountains every fall and for whom my Franconian hunter-friends had nothing but contempt.

If I believed that Palin was hunting to feed her family (already pretty well-supported by two full-time working parents and the bonuses awarded to all Alaskans as part of their deal with Big Oil) I would be more sympathetic. But from what I have seen and read, that isn't the case.
