Subject: Playing the "gender" card?

ST. PAUL, Minn. - John McCain's campaign on Wednesday angrily called for an end to questions about Sarah Palin's background, calling it a "faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee" for vice president.

Let me get this straight.... We have no right to question Palin's history, her political and personal background...why? Because she's "the first FEMALE Republican nominee?"

We can't ask how she expects to balance the demands of her much-touted embrace of "family values" and her own family - including four children (one with special needs, and another who is about to become a teenage mother herself) under the age of seventeen - with the demands of being Vice President?

We can't ask whether her removal of a top Alaskan Department head was arbitrary and ethically questionable - even though it is being investigated on that basis by the Alaskan Legislature?

We can't ask whether her acceptance of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from a Lobbyist for Big Oil and his employees (now convicted of illegal campaign contribution activities) as well as her many links to Senator Ted Stevens (who campaigned actively for her in 2006), currently under indictment on corruption charges, contradicts her frequent and strident proclamations of being a "reformer" and an "opponent" of Alaska's corrupt Republican political system?

We can't wonder aloud whether the many "pork-barrel" projects for which she sought funding, both as a small-town Mayor and as Governor of Alaska give the lie to her claims of being an "anti-establishment maverick?"

We can't ask whether her "flip-flop" on the "bridge to nowhere" - from strongly supporting it to opposing it - represents "integrity" rather than "political opportunism?"

In short, we can't ask any of the probing questions we would ask any other candidate about their past behavior and background...why? Because she gets a "free pass" as "the first FEMALE Republican nominee?"

Wowzer! If Republican logic becomes any more compelling than that, I don't see how they can lose!
