Sorry to disagree but the chevy Vega engine was GMs first all aluminum engine project. it had a cast aluminum block and a tall head which got it the nickname of the worlds tallest smallest engine in the development process.
By 74 they had redesigned the coolant and oil passages to solve the two problems that the engine had which resulted in the overheating and oil loss problems that plagued the Vega till then. not only did the engine boil off coolant but it also burnt off oil and when both were neglected ( which most american drivers were prone to ) the heads would warp and the block could crack or the engine sieze quite easily.
We replaced or rebuilt engines for annie Pitney who had the wagon version many times , almost regularly so I guess she was one of the people who never checked anything. She was also Supermans grandmother and ived lkess than a mile from my house.
But back to the vega.... Pontaic of course sold their version the rebadged Astra which was first sold in canada starting in 74 so had fewer engine problems. they eventually built the Iron Duke four and used it in the 77 astra and the sunbird which followed in 78 ( the astree wagon body was the firsr sunbird wagon just as the Vega carried over bodies to the Monza models in 78 at least.

If I remember right the cosworth was all silver with black racing stripes when he had it so they must have made them in other color schemes as well as the one you remember.

Yeah 396 was a damn good engine for all it was a gas hog but not as bad as many other v8s. That 396 nova was a shit your pants beast as I remember thanks to the muchh lighter body. Once Pontaic put an 8 in the tempest the flood gates were open for muscle cars and each division as well as the competitors was trying to find the combo that would take out the other guy. Once they began putting hi po v8s into pony cars though the concept began to get dangerous.

Tony Booth had the HP pontiac firebird and didn't fast Eddie have the HP Camaro ? that would be the one he put into the Gale I believe comiong down the hill one day....
