Certainly should not be a forbidden subject and deserves some discussion for a number of reasons.

Despite 999 out of 1000 exploratory wells drilled in the gulf the one that caused this disaster might be the single worst environmental screwup of all time ( at least until the next one comes along ) .
An underwater blowout preventer that was supposed to make this impossible failed to function and no one yet knows why that didn't work , a fire and explosion on the platform that still needs to be analyzed and all that after the fact stuff that will take time and might still not be definitive on what happened in what order and why the rig sank and did even more damage to the hardware than was anticipated.
All now irrelevant to the present problem which is how to stop the results.

Has anyone noticed that BP has stopped their Beyond Petroleum advertisements that emphasised their green tech initiatives over their petro biz since this happened ? guess they felt it was a bad policy to tout the green way they were trying to go while causing or being a part of the worst oil disaster of the era.

Good points or bad points of this are sort of off the board right now. Might lead to much more stringent safety and environmental safeguards but might also cause much more energy restriction while that is going forward.

While the fact that the oil is being treated with dispersants so not the heavy crude slop like what still can be found under rocks in Alaska where the tanker disaster took place , that might also be a cause for more concern as it follows the currents and moves about in the gulf than maybe follows the gulf stream around the florida peninsula and up the east coast.
No one yet knows how much damage to the gulf ecology has already happened or will result from this ongoing leak or if there will be any way to prevent the same thing from happening again.

That's all technical and environmental and still doesn't address the impact on the human side that will occur and might continue to expand both for the region and for the country in general when you consider how vital a part of the economy the region and what it does is to all of us.

Food , trade, energy , not to mention what the people involved already will need to just come out even.
