Kelsy if you have not already done the drive I would say go for it and visit Mt Rushmore.

Always regretted not having gone there back in 65 on a family trip but we just did not have the time to do that.
Went cross country via a southern route then up to rt 66 ( there was still a lot of it in use back then ) down to the southwest and went to the tonto rim. phoenix to visit friends , south side of the grand canyon then over to california to visit relatives, up the coast to northern Cal, then big trees and the redwoods before down to zion and Bryce ,silver city and the poainted desert , the north rim and up as far as cheyenne, tetons and the lake , yellowstone and other locations that were a lot ewasier to get into back then.
Went back across the northern route including the straights of mackinack and across canada for a bit in ontario . then down through western NY after the falls through the lakes country and visiting relatives and freinds along the way from Toronto to whitehorse NY before returning to NJ.

Dad was a biology instructor and ag major so he took pictures of all sorts of vegetation , wildlife , and geology as well as th historical and natural features for use in instruction.
He got to write the entire trip off as reseach since the IRS guy said try it and see if they accept it.

Sure would have liked to see the places we missed but maybe it will still be possible to do that some day.
