The " swine flu shots " were a major messup. the vaccine was made for that strain and when it never really materialised they just went ahead and gave them out for free anyhow since the would otherwise just have a lot of vaccine on hand going bad. There may have been some prophlactic effect from it but it wasn't tailored to the strain that actually got into circulation.
Most people got the shots anyhow ( well they were free or should we say we had already paid for them ) so people went unless specifically told not to get them.
My dad was one of the people who had a reaction to the shot wich was a minor problem. He didn't have a bad case but did spend some time bedridden. some people got very very sick from the shot and some may have diead as a result though the jury was out on that pending background checks to see if they were already sick when they got the free shot last time I checked.

Morgan is right about people failing to do basic preventive steps like washing hands etc. In most other parts of the world when there is a warning about something like the flu that can be airborn people use those face masks but not that much here in the US ( too macho for their own good when it comes to health maybe ? and I mean both the guys and the gals ) .
However the flu shot thing was a good excercise in what to do and what not to do if a real threat came along in the future and they learned a lot from that , they just didn't bother to apply a lot of what they learned not then nor for the next twenty or so years.

It's a government thing when there is a threat they get very adamant and involved with solving the problem but when it goes away they put it on the back burner and forget it in favor of whatever is the next thing on the agenda.

Example is the water problem here in jersey. there are periodic droughts and floods in the two major river systems that cross the state from north to south. one goes to the ny bay area and the other to the raritan river outlet. when it floods on the passaic it can be dry on the raritan and visa versa. For almost a hundred years now whenever there is one or the other problem they talk about putting the pipeline in between the two watersheds and when the problem ceases they forget about it until the next time there is a problem.
Government always talks a good game but seldom actually plays one.

As for Gerry Ford he really didn't do that bad a job for an interim president chosen by both parties as the only person they could agree on being more or less of a cypher to fill the spot vacated by spiros agnostopheles when he stepped down to avoid the tax prosecutions. ANyone more capable or partisan would have been halted by one side or the other in the vetting process and everyone in congress knew him and nobody was worried he would be a problem for congress to deal with when the inevitable came about and he took the top executive spot as they all knew was going to happen eventually. In a way I feel sorry for the guy who probably owuld have been more than content to live out his political career in the legislature and retire a virtual unknown outside of a small circle.
On the other hand his Golf skills were a thing of beauty for the comedy writers ..... %^)
