Friends -

I agree with Nancy and those who think it is worthwhile to find a way to keep the fund alive. I'm willing to contribute, but given my very limited means, I can't do as much as I'd like to.

Melanie - how much do we need to add to get above the $15,000 threshold? We have the Heard List, the forum and Facebook - does it makes sense to put out an appeal and get "pledges" - and see if there are enough of us interested to re-build the fund to a viable level?

As far as the quality of the essays submitted is concerned, is there anything we can do - such as adjusting the parameters to require applicants to some reading and write their essays as a response, rather than a somewhat more free form? Even toady $250-500 is a nice chunk of change for a graduating High School student. It seems at least a few ought to be willing to work for it.

Franconia was an inspiration and a revelation to many of us. If we can communicate some of that experience and memorialize it in yearly scholarships that require students seek a little inspiration and revelation of their own, I think it is worthwhile to do so.
